I un-installed the ATI video card driver and enable the native windows video driver. Recently (last week or so) I have had two system lockups at night. I'm still using the native video driver and completely turned off sleep/hibernate. oddly enough, the system works well when I manually put it to sleep or hibernate, entering into those modes automatically sends the system into fits.

Adjust S3 settings in BIOS.

Mine also freezes up, so like you I am using high performance and sleep never. I'll see if it works for m:sarc:e.
This happens everytime I leave my laptop downloading something, Seven just locks up and freezes (I can't do anything, be it move the mouse or ctrl+alt+del), when I leave it and take a look after a while it's already frozen, so I've never caught the locking up.
Any ideas?

Have HP Pavillion desktop with Windows 7 (32 bit) and GeForce 9500 Video card and 2G Ram.

The computer, when left idle for a while, will lock up (i.e. mouse and keyboard lockup). The system will begin responding again after a wait of about 2-5 minutes.

Have no idea as to solution, but thought I would mention my configuration to point out that the problem may not be related to "laptop" or "ATI" video card and that the system will return to normal after 2-5 minutes after moving the mouse or hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del on the otherwise unresponsive keyboard.

I called Dell Tech Support Last night in regards to my Dell Studio XPS 1645 laptop locking up. Long story short, they will be sending me a larger power supply which now supplies 130W as opposed to the 90W charger that it came with. Also, when I receive this, I should update the BIOS to revision A07. These should solve the locking up problems according to dell. I should be receiving the A/C power adapter on the 22nd of Feb 2010 and will update the BIOS then and report back. ...the only thing I find fault with this is that I've had my computer lock up while using the battery so we shall see if this is really a fix.

Hi Andrew86 (& rfink),

Seems you and I have the same system and same exact problem. I just received mine last week 3/3/10. I’ve got the Dell XPS 1645 with the i7 720QM & 8GB RAM. I’m a software developer and run a lot of VM’s and this lock up problem has been driving me nuts to say the least. Thank you all for your helpful posts.

I contacted Dell and long story short, got them to send me a 130W power supply. In the meantime, I’ve upgraded the BIOS to A07 and am waiting for the new power supply.

Also, for other Dell users, I found this helpful link on the XPS 16:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=446193

So, Andrew86, can you post again to update us if this 130W power supply and A07 BIOS has resolved your issues….or have you experienced any other lock ups?

Thanks,

Mike =:-)

Hello Mike,
I got my computer in November 2009 and had the freezing problem until I got a problem booting my system in February 2010. I ran a diagnostic test and it said that I had error 2000-0146. Dell tech support told me that the error was due to all the hard shutdowns that I had been doing over the past 4 months. (about 2-3 per day for 4 months!!) Anyway, they sent me the power adapter, I reformatted the computer to fix my booting issue and reinstalled all of the factory installed hardward as well as BIOS rev 07. Since I have done all of this, I have not had 1 single instance of the computer locking up. I've been on my computer for probably 10-12 hours a day since then and it has never faultered. And I'm pleased to announce that my benchmark performance scores have gone up since I got the new 130W adapter and run BIOS 07. I do a lot of CAD modelling and rendering and this has really made a difference for me with the extra performance that I'm getting! Anyway, I'm not really sure now what solved the issue as I reformatted and installed BIOS 07 around the same time. I would recommend installing the newest BIOS and using the newest adapter first and seeing if it locks up. Then, if it still does, format and reinstall everything. In the process of rebuilding the software after the format, I found this neat site that dell provides since they don't like to send all of their software with their computers anymore. It was very helpful! https://smartsource.dell.com/Web/Welcome.aspx?ReturnUrl=/web/main.aspx
If you have any additonal questions I'd be happy to answer them Mike. I absolutely love my 1645 now that it's running smoothly. It's such a sweet computer!
-Andrew

I am having the same problem when I leave my computer for a while 15 min. to 5 hrs. My pointer freezes and the ctrl alt delete does not work nor does the windows key to open the start menu. some times it will respond after I set and wait for 5 min. but at times I can only turn off the computer with the power switch. When computer restarts every thing works normal. This is intermittent some times several times a day. Some times once a day.

I have the lockup problem too, but only when a torrent program is running.

This thread has multiple symptoms and causes - too many angles.

I solved this problem by reinstalling Windows 7. Is you have a Windows partition, just reinstall using the upgrade option. I tried this with Windows Ultimate and it worked very well.
