So - I finally decided to run defrag even though it runs weekly, then ran chkdsk again using the following that someone suggested trying
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/4566-problem-reports-solutions-view-history-details.html
It found disk cluster errors and repaired them and is now running faster and better. I am going to see if sfc will run next - tomorrow after I get some sleep. Thanks for all your help and suggestions. I will report back after running sfc again.

Mate it still would have helped if there was specs for that machine but I guess its going so I am leaving it to the others.

You've been repeatedly advised to run the HD maker's
HD Diagnostic extended CD scan which determines with certainty the HD condition. You reply with everything but what you've been advised. Why?
Your HD is at issue. It needs to be tested. The rest can wait.

I agree entirely with greg. Whenever one encounters an I/O error it is always prudent to check the HDD first with the manufacturer's diagnostic utility and clear it.
While watching this thread I am amazed to find the OP consistently not taking cognizance of this. Upto this point he has not even mentioned the manufacturer/ model of his HDD.

IO error comes up after a reboot.
In what stage? Before logon? When doing chkdsk?
Do what GREG tells you all the time

Yes and I did do that several times after your suggestion, but it didn't find the errors then. Maybe it was the defrag then chkdsk that made it work. Thanks for your input.

^ ICit2lol and the OP are referring to running SFC and checkdisk in safe mode. There is as yet no indication of the OP running any HDD diagnostics.
Just leave him alone instead of tiring yourself..
