I'm trying to set of a shared drive on my XP machine for my other computers to use (cheaper than a NAS), unfortunately I'm having difficulty with my only windows 7 machine. The windows 7 machine will not display any other machines in the "see full map" thing they have. Here are the symptoms I have thus far:

  • XP can ping 7, but 7 cannot ping XP
  • Both are visible to each other with NET VIEW but neither can be accessed by
    NET VIEW \\name
  • XP can see 7 in "my network places"
  • NETBIOS is enabled on both machines
  • They are both on the same work group
  • Firewall is turned off on XP
  • The shared Public folder isn't visible in XP
  • On Windows 7 all advanced sharing settings are turned on
  • On Windows 7 I am not in any homegorup, the network is set to work

any help would be greatly appreciated

Your network may be set to "Work" but that's not the same as being in a Workgroup.

There are two different parts of the network configuration that people usually get tripped up on.

1) Home/Work

2) Homegroup/Workgroup

Home/Work is simply a pre defined setting which lets you set the security settings for your network. It doesn't matter which of these you choose, as it doesn't effect the network as a whole.

The important part is Homegroup/Workgroup. Homegroup is the new networking tool for Windows 7 only. Workgroups have been around for a while and these are the groups you want to use if you're networking XP and 7.

Anyway, here's a full tutorial on how to set your network up correctly.

Already tried all that, still nothing. They are already on the same workgroup, and as a PC with 7 on "homegroup" is allegedly invisible to XP I chose not to create one.

Try to configure again your network in Change Advanced Sharing Settings, in "File Sharing Connection" are you already checked the "Enable file sharing for device that use 40- or 56- bit encryption" option?

When I type in "Net view \\XPCOMPUTER" it gives me system error 53, but even when I have firewalls disabled.

Have you ever had a 3rd party firewall installed..like zonealarm on your XP PC? There could be a problem with the XP firewall have you tried to reinstall it?

I use the McAfee firewall, but have added the entire home IP address range to the trusted list. And unfortunately this morning for some reason, windows 7 is no longer appearing under net view (on either machine)

EDIT: I edited the allowanonymous registry and I can now see and access 7 from xp. XP unfortunately is still not accessible to 7.

Well at this point I would use to tool/util from Mcafee to uninstall it. Reboot XP make sure its on the same workgroup then try to ping (making sure XP is visable to ping). I would also remove the tick for show UPNP devices then try to map with both ip/name address if that does not work reinstall the XP firewall.
That's what I would do next.....
