Sheilds Up...?

Been playing with this issue since the time of the first post... My findings with dialup showed totally protected on all counts using GRC.. With wireless it wasn't bad but by all means my firewall needs to be adjusted... The router in question is a cross the street from me... GL
Are you saying that you log onto someone else's network ?

Yes I am, I have the guys permission as his wife left him and he doesn't have a computer... I was going to wait till I got my own wireless router to try to hack, but he told me to give it a go as he no longer had the keys for it... Took only a few mins to get... and now he has a copy of his keys... :) Even offered him cash for month usage fees as he is under a contract... To date he still will not accept any cash...

Is the router secured? Are you/he using any encryption? If not, I would strongly advise it.

I have done more than one which is listed... It's a great tool for getting your lost keys or to help a friend get theirs... This is not a place to talk about hacking keys or phrases... Suggest a very very very strong password if using WPA or WPA2 other wise your at risk... GL If you are using one with WEP, throw that sucker in the garbage...

Hmm... I've hacked my own AP in [edit] WEP mode, less than 5 minutes... Never had any luck when it's connected to my RADIUS server+WPA2 Enterprise+AES... My easiest way would be rather than hack the air waves, I whack the reset button on the AP/router... That does it 100%, every time :D :D :D (Then I put a new, 32+ characters of random garbage, not even I can remember it).

It's not AV test.
There is two explanations why you have passed the test:
1. Windows Firewall is enabled
2. You are connected to Router (So it's your routers firewall which is stealthing ports)

I have:
Each router brand has its own screen setup. Assuming you are behind a router, it appears from your screen shot that your ISP, Verizon, has that particular setup for the router they are supplying.

I notice your screen shot is of the general page and low security is selected. Have you explored each of the tabs below General, particularly Access Control, Remote Administration, and Advanced filtering, see what these tabs offer?

If Verizon has a help line, you might consider calling them and letting them talk you through securing your router. Since all I have to go on is the screen shot of your general page, it is difficult to make a recommendation.

It appears to me that the router security setting is weak. I think you need at least the medium setting and possibly the high setting is equivalent to the security I have set up on my router. Unless you have a specific need for remote administration, you want that blocked. Perhaps the Access Control page will allow you to block netbios?

I suggest you go to GRC's Shields Up and test your current low setting. The test will show you if your computer can be seen from the internet. It will also tell you which ports, if any, are open to the internet and thus vulnerable. Go to GRC|Gibson Research Corporation Home Page, scroll down, and click on ShieldsUP. Run each of the first three tests. These will tell you how secure you are. What you want is for your computer to be invisible from the internet and have no open ports.

You might also set the security level to Maximum and run the tests a second time. If setting the security level to Maximum does not adversely affect the way your normally operate your computer, I would leave it set to Maximum. The Maximum setting allows you to use email, your web browser, and file transfer.

Let me know how your tests come out.
