Any way to keep folders or PDFs in the same position permanently?

Hi Tweaker,

Thank you so much for this awesome program. By the way, when I open the same name folders or even different files within a program (e.g., multiple PDFs or MS WORDs), it changes the folder position that is a bit lower than the previous one. Please take a look at the attached captured image. Is there perhaps way to keep folders or PDFs in the same position with the same size permanently whether I open the same folders or same type of files multiple times? Thank you very much again!

I find the current version, 1.1.4, works great for both Win 8.1 and 10. I only run 10 on a VM, as I'm not willing to put up with degraded functionality just to have "the latest", so I still have Win 8.1 on my main workstation. ShellFolderFix rocks!

I like the way ShellFolderFix does what it does, and quite frankly I don't think I'd have been nearly as productive over the past 7 or so years if you hadn't so graciously provided this software. Thank you!

I was wondering... Is there any chance ShellFolderFix could be extended to manage all applications?

What I mean, specifically is that if an application itself doesn't reposition its window upon next open in the same place it was last used, could the code in ShellFolderFix be repurposed into making it open in the position it was last in (or at least very quickly moving it there)?

Would you be willing to share the source code? I'd be interested in contributing to its advancement in this direction.

Thanks.

-Noel

Noel, on my Win 7 machine, it appears that ShellFolderFix works for all application Windows, no exceptions. It's only now after reading the first post in this thread that I discover that it isn't supposed to. Strange.

It's been a long time since the developer has returned here. Their last login was June 2011. I hope they are well and nothing bad has happened to them.

I have just zipped up my copy of ShellFolderFix and put it in my dropbox if anyone else wants it.

No I can't/won't offer support and it's use at your own risk.

I've used it since 2010 and love it.

Hi all. I've just seen that the download links are not available any more, and people cannot find any other place where the ShellFolderFix can be downloaded, so I thought I would share my copy of it.

I used SFF for very long time on Windows 7, and it was a blessing. Then I moved to Windows 8 and 10 on my devices, and it wasn't needed any more. Recently I had to return to Windows 7 on some of my machines, and I noticed the SFF is not needed any more. It looks like Windows will now remember folder window positions by itself, like in Windows XP. However, SFF may be still useful for those wanting more control over how the position-keeping behaves.

The zipped file contains all of the versions that were available: installer and both 32 and 64-bit versions in a manual installation form. I intend this link to be available for a very long time - possibly until I die or dropbox stops providing free services :) But someone could make a mirror anyway, perhaps on a different file hosting service, just in case.

Bon apetit :)

Disclaimer: I only provide the original files to download, because they are not available from the source any more. I'm not in any way associated with the creator of the program, and I don't provide any support. I have not modified the files in any way. Use at your own risk.

Dropbox have been making changes I think. The file is still in my dropbox but they've changed the link to it..

Thanks for doing this mate. You are right about having it on another site as well.

I have uploaded it to my business site in case dropbox do more weird stuff :)

Was the file in a public Dropbox folder? As of March 1, 2017, all DB public folders were converted to private folders.

Thanks greatly for posting the link to Win 7 Shell folder fix. I've been very frustrated fighting with this issue for over a month, lots of useless references to links that no longer work. Really "ticked" me off.
Your fix did work perfectly, I couldn't believe it when I first saw it, thanks again a thousand times.

What? For me it is still needed on Win 8.1

Don't know why, but the folder window positions and sizes are now properly remembered on my all Windows 7 and 8.1 machines without SFF (SFF has not been installed since system installation). I'm also using Classic Shell on all of them, but I can't find any option for that in it, so it's probably not it.

Same here! I am running Windows 8.1 x64 and I still use it. As soon as I disable it, things revert back to the annoying way it was.

So has this really been fixed in Windows 10?

Must run @ every startup

This shell folder fix works well, but...

It has to be executed every time the computer starts up.
I put a shortcut of the .exe file in the startup folder, works good enuf for me.

Hi Paul,

The 2nd checkbox option in the 'General' section of the application is 'Start automatically at logon' which may not be on by default, but the shortcut in the startup folder works too!

The only other option I have looked into is called WindowManager from DeskSoft, which sells for about $10:
DeskSoft - WindowManager - Window position and size manager

No, there's no change in Windows 10. And I've never found a good answer for why MS hasn't fixed the BUG in their software. (No, I can't bring myself to call it a needed "feature" since it worked just fine in Windows before!)

And since you don't know it wasn't fixed in Win10, I'm guessing you never upgraded. Unless you've got some custom program that won't run on Wni10, I sure would go see if you can still get the free upgrade!
