I don't know what I did, but I now have a blue and gold shield superimpsed on some of the desktop icon. The shield is the same one that is shown in Properties | Compatibility | "Change setting for all users. I have tried everything that I can think of to get rid of the shield but nothing works. The screen shot below shows the shield. Any suggestions for removing it from desktop icons?

Hello Colion,

The yellow/blue shield on a "elevated" program's shortcut or exe file indicates that the it will give you a UAC prompt asking you to "Allow" it to run as elevated (Run as administrator) when you open it. That's all.

Thanks Brink. Can you tell me what settings to use to eliminate the shield? I have tried checking and unchecking "Run as Administrator" but the shield and UAC prompt appear in both cases.

If the Program is Classed as Unknown or it needs to Access Your entire Computer then the Icon will appear could you give us the name of the Program

You can eliminate it by Being the Built In Administrator but that is Risky

Many Thanks,
Josh

In addition, turning off UAC should remove the sheild icon as well. However, you'll be putting your computer at more of a security risk by doing so.

I would recommend to leave it as be to more secure. It's only there to let you know that you will get a UAC prompt when you open it. It's not that ugly is it? ;)

I think I got rid of all of the shields except one on a *.exe file. What I did was right click to get the properties dialog and then went to "Change Icon". In all cases, the original icon was shown. Choosing that icon eliminated the shield. So now I am down from about 20 "shield" icons to one and hopefully the icons will stay that way. I don't understand what is going on but Microsoft should make this stuff a bit more "idiot proof".

One person claimed to have disabled UAC, rebooted, then re-enabled UAC.
