Should companies wait for Windows 7 SP1?

From several articles, seem like companies are not waiting for SP1 to upgrade their OS's. What are your thoughts?

Win 7 is based completely of Windows Vista. I feel like Win 7 kind of is Vista SP3.. Due to Vista's failures, I expect to see more and more companies upgrade from Vista almost immediately.

The upgrade from XP to Windows 7 will be much much slower. Companies will have to wait for software to be fully tested before upgrading, just like what happened with XP to Vista.

I do not think its necessary to wait. The pre SP1 period for Windows 7 was called Vista.

I've been a Vista user, and now a Windows 7 user since the beta days, and while it's fine for individuals to run an OS right off the shelf, companies, especially large corporations should have a wait and see attitude. In today’s global market and information age, the last thing you want to do is run an OS that’s less than 6 months old. That’s bad business in my opinion.

Its one thing for individuals to use a newly released OS, it’s entirely different for a company to do it on a large scale, so I say they should wait a little longer, not necessarily for SP1, but maybe a year before migrating company wide.

migrating into a new OS company wide for large corporations presents a lot more issues/problems then just stability/securtiy issues that SP's fix.

Regardless there is a lot that needs to be done and the switch doesnt just happen.

Yeah, a single companies descision to switch is made on several factors. Upgrade cycle and testing for internal software compatibility are two of the big ones.

A company may switch within a couple months of internal testing or they may wait for money to be available or when the lifecycle of current installed machines is up or until some obscure bug is fixed that prevents them from running internal custom software (either on MS or their own side).

Sheer laziness and tight-fisted use of captial are really the MAIN issues though. If a company could get away with never upgrading anything ever again that would be by far the most preferred path.

I'm not sure anyone other than a few individuals actually anicdotally "Wait for SP1"

I haven't seen any real issues with Windows 7 that would make me want to wait for a SP. In fact, I was happy with Win7 in the Beta and RC1 stages for that matter. Like others said, not a revolutionary change from Vista...so it works well already.

i dont think anything you've said here is correct. 7 is more like vista done right then vista sp3, it's a very stable user friendly OS that also has a lot of features directed at power users built in. maybe your just looking at the exterior and thinking "hey it looks similar to vista so it must be the same."

also 7 has a phenomal upgrade rate, companies are eagerly switching from both xp and vista to adopt it. this will speed up over the next few years as not very many companies are going to wait for ms to drop support on xp to be forced into a change.

Have been a beta tester for over a year with each subsequent version til retail. Watched each bug get squashed and now have what appears to be a flawless OS.

I just don't see any issues for which one should wait for fix. It is perfect, the best invention since the p.c.

i dont think anything you've said here is correct. 7 is more like vista done right then vista sp3

- I'm not the only one that believes it.. Windows 7 Is Vista's Twin and Windows 7 - Like Vista, just a bit easier to use and less annoying

Or the fact that XP was version 5.x, Vista is version 6.0, and Windows 7 is version 6.1 So close to Vista that it stayed under the same release version :sarc:

- Companies have been waiting to switch from Vista since they first installed it. Where have you read about a phenomal upgrade rate from XP to Win 7 for businesses? If anything, companies will be even more weary about upgrading.

Windows 7 success is a lot based on Vista's failures. Since it's pretty much the same OS, with a bunch of tiny fixes, companies that have prepared to upgrade from XP to Vista will be able to upgrade to Windows 7 much easier. There won't be as big of a jump as there was with XP to Vista.

- I completely agree.. that's the corporate world! 6 months may be an understatement though, there are still thousands of companies that haven't upgraded or even considered to upgrade to Vista.

Declaring off the bat that you are waiting for SP1 shows several things. First, it shows a lack of research and testing on the part of the company's IT Staff. It also shows a general laziness, and an overall "unwillingness to adopt new ways of thinking".

Besides, with the more recent OSes, service packs have been more about security roll-ups, than actual fixes or new features.

Heavy companies didn't switch from xp to vista. 7 will be no different, XP will be EoL in a few years thus forcing corporate upgrades but not without years of testing. Companies with proprietary software (all heavy companies) will have go through another gauntlet of testing and planning before even planning sectional upgrades. ie: 2k to xp

I used to work for a fairly large company and they didn't wholesale move from Windows XP to Windows Vista. However, they are planning and working on moving from XP to Windows 7 as the standard at this point. Eventually companies want to get away from XP, it's old, it's ugly, has fewer new features being released.....but Vista wasn't the answer for a variety of reasons. Windows 7 on the other hand is well regarded and works well. Plus, we've had a few years for companies to update their old outdated equipment and that is helping with the newer OS as well.
