Should i get an SSD ? [Please Read]

I equipped all my 6 PCs with SSDs - also my 2 old laptops from 2007. The speed difference is very noticeable.

With an older PC it is not necessary to go for a leading edge SSD which costs more than some older model. Any SSD from a reputable company will do in that case. I always bought my SSDs by price - looking for the cheapest.

And I also agree that on a desktop where you keep the HDD for storing the data, a 64GB SSD would suffice for the OS - unless you need the extra space e.g. for running virtual partitions.

I will be interested to see how you get on. Never heard of Flubit before, seems a reasonable idea.

Your pc is not that old, curious to see what can be done to improve it and keep it going. It could last well for quite a long while. I have a desktop that is about 6yrs old now. I have just increased ddr2 ram from 2gb to 4gb. It might benefit from a ssd. Nothing lost there, it could always be moved to another/newer machine.

Received my Flubit price in the end £74.49 !! , people got it around 63-65 from Flubit when it was 70.99 on amazon for 2 days, 69.99 over on MobyMemory and the company is local to me too :D

Yes, definitely so. Since you have Intel be sure to check the Gigabyte support page for your board for any updated Intel storage driver (iastor.sys).

Please can you help me find it for my board :(

Closest thing i can find is this : ACER Aspire M3802 SATA AHCI Driver v.8.9.0.1023 free download for Windows 7 64-bit and the date is October 09 and i bought the PC in 2010
Stay away from driver pages like that. Go here: GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 775 - GA-EG43M-S2H (rev. 1.1) Support and Downloads, SATA RAID/AHCI/ Intel SATA RAID/AHCI Driver, it's dated 2009/08/11.
Confirm that IS your motherboard.

you can check your SATA driver version in Device Manager. Go to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, click the arrow and double click the line that opens to open the Properties page. In the Driver tab you can see the version as shown below.

Even at only 3Gbps, an SSD will still be a significant improvement over a HDD.

Excuse me, but that is a lot of bull. Ask your friends how much own experience they have with SSDs.

I use SSDs since 5 years (my first OCZ 60GB cost $260) and have never looked back. Today I have 8 SSDs and use them even to run virtual partitions via USB attachment.

HDDs have their place for storing large amounts of data, but for the OS, a SSD is the best investment you can make - especially at today's prices.

Between the two, I would go with the Samsung 840 EVO 120GB. I still favor the Samsung 840 Pro series because it uses the proven MLC storage technology opposed to the EVO's TLC and theoretically should have a longer life. However, recent results from endurance tests have shown that, although the Pros will most likely outlast the EVOs, the EVOS will still most likely last longer than any machine it is put into and be superseded by newer technology before finally giving up the ghost. Also. SSDs tend to lose capacity gradually when reaching the end of their usable lifespan rather than just take a dump unexpectedly like HDDs will.

I would buy whatever is cheapest. Too bad you are not in the US because there Newegg has frequent special SSD offerings. That's where I buy.

And since you have only 3Gb ports, there is no need to go for 6Gb SSDs - although they will work.

Most, if not all, 6Gbps SSDs will be faster than the older 3Gbps SSDs, even if used on a 3Gbps port.

I wouldn't shop around for a SATA II SSD, because SATA III drives are a thousand times more common, and probably cheaper. Also, when you go to upgrade your PC, you have a nice SSD to carry over to it.

As to your "tech" friends, ask them if they know exactly what is lost from a SATA III drive running on a SATA II port. Not anything important.........that's the answer. SSD's excel in Random Read/Write speeds at any queue depth from 1 and up, and in file access times which isn't affected by SATA II limitations. I have an Intel SATA II SSD and a Samsung SATA III SSD and the numbers that actually matter are damn near identical.

I'd get the Samsung drive over the Kingston you are looking at because Samsung is the Gold Standard in the SSD market, mainly because they make and design EVERYTHING in their SSD's.

Here are some comparisons of one of my hard drives and my SSD:
