Should I or Shouldn't I Use a registry Cleaner

I've been using a computer (not this one) since 1987. The last 5 years or so I've been using these system optimizer(s) to clean junk files and remove internet traces from my system. I can see the benefits of this. I have a couple questions concerning these so-called system optimizers.

First, does Windows Disk Cleaner clean as well as these other cleaners out on the market? For the first time I'm considering simply using Disk Cleaner to do my maintenance with.

Second, these Registry cleaners. So far I really haven'[t noticed any performance increase when using these registry cleaners. I was wondering about registry entries left behind by other software after uninstalling them. Is the any way, and this may seem like a dumb question, that these entries left behind by uninstalled software, can be triggers for malware? Seems today every product or web site wants to access your computer in some shape or form. How do I know that registry entries left behind aren't somehow access the web without my knowledge. I do have 3 antimalware programs with one real time and the other two strictly for scanning.

"Clean as well". What's that? Does it remove as much as Brand X might? No.

You get to decide if that is "as well".

It seems to me that most people that use registry cleaners do so because they feel uncomfortable and anxious if they don't----not because it results in a measurable improvement.

I wouldn't expect anyone to do anything that left them feeling uncomfortable and/or anxious.

As with discussions about defragmenting programs and page file fiddling, few minds get changed.

There is always the risk a registry cleaner can remove a 'good' entry. It is best not to use them. However, I confess to using Ccleaner (the best, in my opinion) in order to remove specific entries that I know exactly what they are and do not want them. I have many entries that are listed that if removed, certain programs would not function.

I usually just clean specific entries from it myself when I think its needed. Having said that..... its hardly EVER needed in my understanding unless you're dealing with specific malware. If you're worried about a certain one "maybe" accessing others ..... take it out manually.

I guess the term for me is anxious and feeling better after I use a registry cleaner.

I have used CCLeaner and I have never saw ANY performance improvement. The same can be said with other registry cleaners/optimizers as they cause more harm than good.

My experiences are the same as WinDude99.

However, I've a gut feeling that you've installed some programs that need to go in order for you to have a stable and reliable system. Please carry out the following:
Install CCleaner:

CCleaner | Tools icon | Startup button | Windows tab |
click on Save to text file button (bottom right side) |
accept Startup.txt as file name | SAVE button

list of SCHEDULED TASKS

CCleaner | Tools icon | Startup button | Scheduled Tasks tab |
click on Save to text file button (bottom right side) |
enter Scheduled Tasks as File name | Save button

List of INSTALLED PROGRAMS

CCleaner | Tools icon | Uninstall button |
click on Save to text file button (bottom right side) |
accept install.txt as File name | Save button


UPLOAD, as an attachment, the startup.txt file
UPLOAD, as an attachment, the Scheduled Tasks.txt file
UPLOAD, as an attachment, the install.txt file.

Personally I use the CC but only when it comes up with unused files / entries or missing DLL's anything else I steer clear off

I just did a clean install of Windows 8 Release Preview, so before I start installing utilities I just wanted some insight. In fact I've used CCleaner alot and I like it. There's nothing in my startup.

Insight. Because it is a preview, be VERY careful with antiviruses and registry cleaners, etc. They aren't geared for the new OS

Dust sailor is right mate some of those really seemingly perfect reg cleaners are literally Trojan horses!
