Before I installed 7100 I decided to redo the raid setup for my raptors and reduced the strip size from 128 to 64 based on a friends recommendation and there isnt much difference in the results:

raided_raptors.JPG
Original with 128 strip

raided_raptors 2.JPG
now with 64 strip

but the plus is that the drives are somewhat quieter :D

Take a look back in the thread on the Kingston flash drive used here that also blasts right past the ATA100/133/150 ide standard still seen with sata hard drives. There's nothing mechanical involved there to start with for instant besides usb bus access.

Here's a comparison between a SSD and a WD Caviar Black HD. I'm using HD Tune 3.0 but it shouldn't be much of a difference. With the SSD, you see the obvious stability which results in much better sustained performance. Of couse, seek times are beyond anything the WD can come close to. Overall, SSD comes out way ahead in this example.

hmm...(scratches chin) your WD500gb is pretty descent, i would run your o/s and software off it due to the lower access time and better burst and ave rates..thats if your not already. thought your cpu usage was high at the time of printing, you need to run it after a fresh boot, the less utilities using the cpu and hdd when testing that specific drive the better sustained results.

for some reason when ever i test with hdtune 3.0 in win7 my cpu usage is -1.0?? dunno why but i still get hdd usage spikes when its benching.

Believe me, this throw away any 10krpm hard drive, SATA1 or SATA2. I had 10krpm drives so I know.

shouldnt that be sata2? the only advantage is that the access time is close to 0.0, but you always want low access time, its what makes it "quick" but my drive beats your mb/s speeds. i have see higher mb/s on ssd's tho.

keep in mind it is solid state storage, there is nothing mechanical about them, no spin up or spin down times, ssd will always beat a mechanical hdd. but a ram disk will put ssd to shame. :)

nice bench tho!

shouldnt that be sata2? the only advantage is that the access time is close to 0.0, but you always want low access time, its what makes it "quick" but my drive beats your mb/s speeds. i have see higher mb/s on ssd's tho.

keep in mind it is solid state storage, there is nothing mechanical about them, no spin up or spin down times, ssd will always beat a mechanical hdd. but a ram disk will put ssd to shame. :)

nice bench tho!

I don't have SATA2 ports on my motherboard. I don't mind at all, my computer is really fast.

sorry i should have looked into your specs, win7 is a great o/s and like you have experienced it does run fast on even older computers. my old lappy runs great on 7057, once the finals leaked ill do a fresh install of that on both my systems. so is that vertex actually a sata2 just running at sata1 speeds or is it a actual sata1 ssd? i wouldnt think they had ssd's in the sata1 days. mind you i have never loked into them until about a month ago.

i like the ideas some vendors are coming up with like small sized ssd's in notebooks, faster system and alot less power consumption which means smaller battery+less weight or longer lasting charge.

Yes, the Vertex (indilinx controller inside) is SATA2 and is reading sequentially between 200 and 250 MB/s.

Take note that there are clones of the Vertex that can cost less (Super Talent UltraDrive ME, G.Skill Falcon...)

Here's mine the OCZ Vertex SSD seems a little disappointing, anyone have any advice apart from getting another and using RAID
