Ironically, it wasn't the hard drive that did it (see my system specs info), the rest of the computer beat it to it :'(

Sorry to hear your rig passed away, but at least the rig had a final tribute forever immortalized in this the "show us your Riga-mortis [2] thread. Now you have a good excuse to save and plan a new build.

I'd only just managed to get it working two months ago (after it being rather unstable for a year) and had just re-gained my faith in my skills, then to have them shattered by it. From what it would appear, the motherboard is shorted :/
I've tried a different PSU and still just fans, so i'll try a different cpu in it tommorrow just in case, but it doesn't look hopefull. I don't see how it could just die like that!
Unfortunately it will probably take me a long time to save up for a new one, but I'm going to go 'all out' and not buy a single piece of second hand stuff. Completely afresh. New case, everything. Hopefully it'll last a little longer

I'm sorry to hear of the restored systems fate, but look at it this way, you get the joy of the new system plan, purchase and execute/build. I for one think that this could be one of the major attractions to building ones own system from the case up. For any input and help please just ask as you are amongst friends that understand !

yeah, that's true. I guess with the dead build it was inevitable it would go wrong at some point. I wanted to keep it 'classic' to its old beige case, so I just picked and chose cheap bits for that. However, many problems then arose such as the case being too small for any other PSU, the HDD sounding like it would die and eventually it all dying.
So yeah, hopefully I will feel compelled to build one, as you said, from the case up.
Thanks for the reassurance linnemeyerhere and IownAmoneyPit, it has stopped me feeling that I wouldn't be capable of creating it
(to be honest, the mobo seemed to be bad when i built it - looks like it finally caught up )

i haven't even begun to fully realise my ruined data on the HDD :/
all my media stuff is on an external drive, so i can use that with my old laptop for the time being. thank goodness there's no critical data on it since it was a fairly new install

None! I actually am this clean haha. I added my keyboard tray back to the desk so I could lower my chair, now the monitors are at tolerable heights.. It's still not perfect though.

yeah, it'll take me a while to get enough money to build my dream machine, but this time I am truly going to build my 'dream machine'.
I appreciate all the positivity from you guys making the best of a bad situation - I've had the computer since 2001 (but changed the internal parts apart from the dvd drive a year ago), so I was attached to it but your encouragement has helped me to get over it
As a 'farewell' to it, I plan on mounting it to the wall, maybe with out the side panel or make a transparent one... transparent with the 'Tiny' logo embossed could look really nice...

wow... those are some pretty impressive performance scores! well, at least in my books they are. don't you think it's a bit silly though that MS pick the lowest score as your result rather than an average? My 6 year old laptop gets a 1.0 (the lowest possible ) due to gaming graphics, yet processor gets a 3.9, RAM gets a 2.9, graphics gets a 1.9 (despite not being able to run aero) and hard drive gets a 3.7.
I guess it could 'inspire' people to want to improve their final score and go and buy some more parts for their computer, which I guess does benefit the user's experience, but probably not their wallet.
Was the cluttered sarcasm?

@Shadowjk Very nice setup! The stats are definitely impressive, and your WEI score on your ram should go up when you get a dedicated video card, if you are using onboard right now. The onboard graphics use your ram as video memory cause there is no dedicated vram, so once you put in a dedicated card, in my experience the ram score will go up.

gee, that sucks about the HDD :/
they should do two different scores, one for hdd and one for ssd, as if I had shelled out on a barracuda or caviar, i'd hope to get a really high score for it :/

The WEI was initially started by MS to let people test their computer to see if it could run Vista and Aero.
They wanted to point out the lowest performing component, which was usually RAM and graphics at that time.

Many complaints were made because Vista wouldn't run on older computers with low performance components, which is a big part of the maligned reputation Vista ended up with.

It has turned into a contest and money making tool due to the quest for the 'Perfect Score', which BTW is nearly impossible, you need lot's of N2 cooling to get the CPU overclocked enough to get a 7.9, many have tried and some have achieved it.

it is a pity about the bad rep vista got, as I thought it was quite a good OS, but people thought (as you said) that they would be able to run it just as well on an XP machine. XP was a breeze on my laptop when it only had 256MB RAM, but even when I doubled the RAM vista was still slow. shame really :/

Yes some do, Mine will when I first do a reformat/reinstall. After a short while it goes down to 7.6 Don't know why but it does.

That is the same thing with me, but I know that right when I get one, Windows 8 will come out, and then we will have to strive to get an 8.9!

yeah, thats just the way the conumer's luck is with technology
eg with apple products, we all know the new iphone will make our shiny new one redundant and worth a lot less in precisely 12 months, yet we still buy one. we're trapped and the companies know it, yet dont do anything to make it better :/
