Personally, I don't believe it is possible to 'keep up with the Jonses'. I don't care how much you spend on a computer, whether it is $1500 or $15,000, I will promise you, there is someone with a better, faster, nicer looking computer than you have. So, the real thing here is about the illness. Most of us have a severe case of a terminal illness which I know of no cure for. It's a compulsion to keep buying parts so you don't go into DT's or having convulsions. It is also highly contagious for those of you who don't have the illness but hang around us that do. Ask Juan. He was not very long ago, perfectly normal until he started hanging out with us. Within a few short months, he was starting a business of building some extremely expensive and fantastic looking computers. I'm sure he would tell you, he couldn't stop if he wanted to. But,in all fairness, we warned him before he started hanging out with us.

+1 It's a lot cheaper than my old hobby/habbit which was heroin so I can quite happily chuck money at my pc as at least I have something to show for it now rather than just throwing money away

IT has reached a point now where the COST is exceeding the expectations of what I expect from a machine and I have to say it is fairly addictive but the race for the highest specs, looks, and speed has put building out of my reach for anything even approaching my basic Ivy.
Now like Ganjiry who had a very habit on his own admission we have all been down some addictive path such as the the tobacco and alcohol paths for example that I myself included (which I managed to give away some time ago) - I still feel that unless one has got money to burn it doesn't justify building machines just to be at the top of some imaginary tree for the purposes of what I perceive in some cases just to have bragging rights about what has been accomplished in any particular build.
I think it is ok that some might like to up the ante on a good machine that they already have to get the max performance and then brag about it because in my eyes that is an accomplishment at costs that I would be guessing is within the bounds of most of the members pockets.
I do feel sorry that we answer queries on problems to members whose specs are very antiquated and have no chance of ever reaching what some can afford.

Same here. Being retired on a fixed income (no, wait, it's going down when Medicare kicks in later this year) has a way of discouraging spending. Besides, I built the computer to use, not just for the fun of building (not that building it wasn't fun and there is nothing wrong with building just for the fun of it).

Good job Bill. One really doesn't know if you machine is "bad" unless you get hooked on a bunch of benchmarks and scores, which don't mean anything if it does all you want. Archie for instance, who does all the great GFX work, has a small laptop.

I joined "you crazies" (I prefer to think of it as polluting the gene pool here rather than joining ) because I was planning on building a machine. It was the only way to get what I wanted.

OK nerd alert ! I've added a new fan to my Prodigy and it's not a Noctua.......still have nothing but love for the N brand but as the largest they build is the 140mm it left my front panel barren so action had to be taken. To the rescue comes BitFenix's 230mm blue led. Then clean some unneeded parts out of the case like the Antec spot fan and the side panel 2.5" drive mount thing as well had to reverse my power and hdd activity light plugs and voila ! Then not shown I added just over 900gb's of wav music to a 2.5" 5400 rpm spinner and added it alongside my 128 gb Samsung 840 Pro and a Seagate 3 tb Barracuda hdd.
Still struggling my way through my overclock as ASUS's bios is giving me fit's but as I become more and more familiar with it things will improve I'm sure.

It was the only way to get what I wanted.[/QUOTE] I am to quote Paul Simon "Still Crazy after all these years". Built my first PC for myself in 2000. Built a bunch for my employer in 1998. Been doing it when I can afford it ever since. Like others it is my hobby and I am somewhat housebound so it gives me something to do. Windows is great as there is always something to fix on 3 systems with multiple OS's and virtual machines. I have learnt a lot over the years. This morning I changed all the plumbing gizmo in the bathroom toilet so now I need to rest. But computing is a great hobby.

Same here although I have only 58GB of mp3s. I've started reripping my CDs as wave so, if I want to change compression in the future, I can start from scratch. So far, I've ripped a bit over 1/4 of my collection and I'm up to 83GB (I expect to take up roughly 300GB by the time I'm finished). I'm reripping to wave because I plan on eventually shredding the physical CDs (they take up way too much room and are heavy).

I dont go OTT on the spending. I replace what needs replacing, and upgrade what needs upgrading. Occasionally ill treat myself to something id like like a new case ect.. but the majority of my system is 2 years old+

My latest purchases was my corsair case (that was just as it looked cool), my corsair k70, i bought as my old keyboard was hardly ever detected so my computer wouldnt boot..

And my only intended purchases in the next few months are a new GPU as my 6950 is showing its age, and another SSD as mine are full

Well I'm basically on a 3 year strategy - every 3 or so I do major upgrades to my system - MB, CPU, RAM. This allows me to stay current while also maintaining a decent backup system as I move my old parts to it.

Been doing that for years. If I had another X58 board I could build another system using my i7-930 chip

Point is I tend not to sell my old parts. Perhaps I need to start as I've got a lot of stuff just collecting dust

Good choice in fan Alan, I had the 200mm version of the Spectre Pro in my last case and they're really good, very quiet and move loads of air
