So far it's cool, quiet and fast. Deals well with 1080p/60fps YouTube videos and Twitch.tv live streams in source quality.

I like!

4th Gen cpu means a whole new board :(
You know, I actually can afford it at the price range, of around around $560~ but when it is delivered to me, it will cost about 140-150$ more at least, at around $700 minimum. So its not affordable
Yes actually I've got the whole thing planned out. If I can sell out my current setup (without PSU and case), I can easily buy 4th gen i7, a good board, GTX 970 AND 16 gigs of ram with about 100$ from my pocket.
So fingers crossed, and hope it all goes according to plan :)

EVGA has it listed at $799

Music has aleays been very important in my life. I can't play anything except records and can barely carry a tune but how it sounds has always been very important to me. It really does not matter how good or bad your hearing is as long as the source material is the best possible. I bought my Father in law a CD for Christmas of recordings of a lady singing from over 100 years ago and he loved it. Amazon.com: Amelita Galli-Curci: Amelita Galli-Curci: The Early Recordings: Music
I have had my B&W DM6 speakers since 1980 and the are just superb. To me motherboard audio does not cut it and I have an add on sound card in all of my main machined. I have a mixture of FLAC lossles files and MP3 320 kb. On of my machines is usually playing audio from my 2 main machines which both have the same sound card in them. So if you have a lousy bootleg recording of you favouritr band it is always going to sound lousy but it can still give you enjoyment. I have no idea how to measure that as we can measure frequency response, noise, wow, flutter and feedback. How do you measure pure enjoyment of a concert you attended and recorded yourself? (I have never done that myself). So there is more to music than the measurements.

Overall, truer words were never spoken. However, some modern MOBOs have pretty darned good onboard sound. There are maybe only three soundcards now that can improve on those onboard sound chips. The only other alternatives would be separate players and amps or USB DACs.

Also Lady F I am a firm believer that although you may not be able to hear the frequencies above 8K the High Frequency Tweeters produce sounds to which create harmonics which you can hear so all is not lost. Some of this can be the brain doing magic. Like I said don't think anyone can fully measure it but it is real and makes the music all the better. I have found myself when listening to a track I know well on the car radio my brain fills in the missing information from when I heard it through headphones or speaker.

Spot on Tony, it's a very slippery slope when entering the area of high end audio and what works for one won't for another. For near field desk audio is a totally different beast then a main listening room or home theater set up, but hear again what works for me likely is overkill and or not nearly enough resolution for another. I've had the honor to listen in Ernie Nudell's home system where he spent more on the foundation and acoustical properties of the room then I've ever spent on all my high end equipment put together. To listen to his IRS speakers powered by only the very best front end and electronics of the time was a jaw dropping sonic joy, I went home and had to kick my AR9's right in their bass drivers.......none of this has stopped me from trying to eek the very best sound from my systems and why I'm building and selling my very own interconnects that one pair cost more than..........you can see where this all leads sonic beauty is in the ears and soul of it's beholder! The most important thing to remember is it's about passions and like all passions they can be singular or enjoyed in mass !

Actually, not being to hear over 8k is a factor in what improvements can be made. What's the point in having higher quality tweeters if one can't hear the output? Also, the same thing that cause the hearing loss above 8k (in my case, old age), also causes a loss in the ability to hear details at lower frequencies. There is a limit to how much improvement one can make before the improvements can no longer be heard or is no longer cost effective. Another limiting factor is the listening environment. My system is in a room that has one window, bare floors, one wall of bypass sliding closet doors, the remaining walls covered with shelves, a desk, a dresser, two night stands, and a twin sized bed. The room is approximately 12' by 10' (yeah, it's pretty crowded). Acoustically, it pretty much sucks but it is what I have available. There is a limit to how good of a sound system can be made to work in here. Also, head phones are not an option (they are uncomfortable).

Humans start to naturally lose their ability to hear higher frequencies as early as their pre-teens (some even earlier). This affecting men more so than woman. But keep in mind that the fundamentals of most instruments are below ~4khz with overtones (or harmonics) raging up into the 16khz region for a very select few - which is beyond what most of us could hear. As per the Fletcher-Munson curves, the most sensitive region of the human hearing is around 2khz to 5khz. This is the critical area for tweeters or any high frequency transducer. However, the ears most accurate region where it will hear the most details is in the midrange between 300hz to 2khz peaking at around 1khz.

I understand that the decay of a cymbal crash, which does have overtones (or shimmer) up to around 12khz may not last as long for you (we are talking milliseconds) as it would for someone who could actually hear 12khz+, but we are talking about such a small detail it’s almost irrelevant. There is so much musical information under 8khz.

You also mentioned headphones not being an option. Is that because you just do not like headphones, and there are many who do not, or is it because the few you have tried felt uncomfortable? The only reason I am bringing this up is because the Xonar’s key feature is its great headphone amplifier. If you have a chance to borrow a pair, and hopefully ones that are not branded by a rap star, give them a try. You may be pleasantly surprised!

I've tried numerous pairs over the past forty some odd years and never could find a pair that were comfortable. But, then again, I don't even like bed sheets touching my ears.

Tommy, nice looking rig and good upgrades for your Daughter, except for the Coolmax. I threw one I had away a couple months ago. Please provide me with your Daughter's email address so I can make sure she know what you have done to her.

Hahahaha

she is going to be 6 i doubt she is going to care :geek:

I hear you i will probably swap it out sooner than later but right now i wanted to get it going

Now this is more of a tablet feel for her because she does amazing things on a tablet and her reading is progressing very nicely so i have to make that system a little more kid friendly if you get me so far it looks pretty sweet and i set up a lot of things so this should be easy for her to navigate she already knows 7 ;)
