Show us your SSD performance 2

What Steve alluded to is that if John had a board that only supports DDR2, It does not have any SATA III ports. SATA II is associated with older boards.

I'm sorry, but I thought that's what I said

I guess it's your way of clarifying what I said

Drew, you said SATAll is usually associated with the newer motherboards I know you meant older MBs, which is what Gary was pointing out ;)

A Guy

Actually I meant was...

SATAlll is usually associated with the newer motherboards motherboards that use DDR3 memory.

I just missed the extra l. Thus my confusion of what was being re-stated. Still didn't see it till your post. Guess I REALLY do need to start wearing my reading glasses more. Something I hate doing as I have to admit to myself my eyesite is isn't what it used to be :(

Anyway my apologies :o

Thanks.

:pIt's OK Drew, I do the same thing...with glasses.

More confusing is that SATA II is 3Gbs and SATA III is 6Gbs and people get the Gbs and the SATA versions transmogrified in their head. (That's a Calvin-used word;))

Is the Sandforce SF-2200 (SF-2281) series controller something everybody should avoid at all costs, or is it an issue only with very specific applications and/or scenarios?

The reason I ask is that a number of SSD's which use this controller have probably taken a small hit price wise because of it (like some models of Kingston, Sandisk, OCZ) and... would that be a worthwhile advantage for most consumer users?

Hi,

Just run that CrystalMark software with my new Plextor M5P 512 GB. The SSD is running in a 3 Gb/s system not in a 6 Gb/s one despite my laptop having a sec gen Intel I7!
Afterall I'm very happy with the real world performance (booting is now at 20,6 sec and SW opens in a click!)

I let you here the tests for the original Seagate Momentus 7200.4 and the Plextor M5P 512GB.

Regards,
paulo

Some may remember I have my browser's temp files data now on my ramdisk.

I dont regret this decision, I since discovered (when it got full) that the amount of writes using browsers does reaches insane proportions, eg. 1 hour of browsing managed to fill my 1 gig ramdisk. So I have concluded my own browsing if writing to ssd would probably be writing in excess of 10 gig a data a day with temp data. Bear in mind when watching things like youtube videos they are also written to browser cache. Its no longer an issue for me with the size of ramdisk as I have set limits for storage the browsers can use. But in terms of ssd write performance I would suggest to anyone with enough ram to either move temporary internet files to a hdd or to a ramdisk.

Have a look at the Samsung 830 256GB, in this SSD endurance testing thread.
SSD Write Endurance 25nm Vs 34nm

(PiB) 4.48 = 5.04 PB (Petabyte) = 5,040 TB = 5,040,000 GB
It's showing signs of wear but, still going.

The average desktop user writes between 7-10 GB worth of information per day.
You can figure out your average writes and do your own calculations.
The easy one, let's use 20GB per day of writes:
7.3 TB per year
5040TB/7.3 = 690 years

Even 100 GB per day still gives you 138 years, not bad.

Even if you get half the SSD life Christopher did your still looking at a lot of writes and a lot of years.
This would mean the 128GB model (quick extrapolation) might get 345years at 20GB/day and 69 years at 100GB/day.
A fifth of that is acceptable.

Not saying reducing writes on SSDs is bad.
I don't worry about writes to SSDs anymore.
The rumors about SSDs being fragile are grossly exaggerated.

I would ditch that in favor of a larger, more up to date SSD. As of right now, Newegg has the Samsung 830 on sale for $79.99. Honestly, by the time you get Windows 7 loaded on there, with updates, you are getting close to filling up that SSD. 128GB is what size most people start out with, as it has plenty of space and has better performance than smaller drives.

Yes. There is a tutorial on here for installing an SSD and loading Windows on it. You are going to put your OS on the SSD, along with programs/applications, etc. Pretty much anything that takes time to open up, you want it on the SSD. Some people even put games on their SSD if they ahve the space. Your HDD will be used as storage. Movies/music/pictures/documents........stuff that takes up a ton of room and doesn't need to load up in a split second, goes on the HDD. In fact, it's common practice to move your "User" folder to your HDD. That way, everything that naturally goes into those folders through normal use, bypasses your SSD completely.

Do a search on here and you will no doubt find hundreds of posts talking about exactly what you want to do. Like I said in my previous post........don't bother with that SSD, when 128GB SSD's are below $100, and offer probably double the speed of the smaller ones.

ohh great great, thats exactly what i was planning to do and the only reason im getting an SSD is to shorten the load times for my games so obviously will put them in the ssd too! Already found a 90GB Kingston SSD with 535 read and 4-something write speed, that seems much faster then the last one.

If you can wait, the Samsung 840 Pro is coming out in a couple of weeks. Should be one of the fastest SSD's on the market, plus you absolutely can't beat Samsung reliability. Newegg has the Samsung 830 128GB on sale TODAY for $79.99 and that is an absolute steal.

30GB is a little tight. With proper planning, you can run the OS on it. But you have to inform yourself what needs to be done (e.g. delete the hiberfile, reduce the pagefile, etc.). And the user files have to go on a HDD.

One option you have (if this is the only model that you can easily get) is to install 2x30GB and run them as Raid0. But this is only possible on a desktop if you have enough Sata ports and power cables.

The OCZ Vertex is a good SSD. I have two 60GB and one 90GB models and never had any problems.

Here is a little tutorial that may give you some more insight: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/149969-ssd-install-transfer-operating-system.html

PS: Just read your other posts. Don't get too excited about transfer speeds. The big numbers are pretty irrelevant because the OS uses only small blocksizes (mainly 4K) to which those numbers do not apply. And anyhow, the fantastic performance of a SSD does not come from the transfer rates but from the extremely short access times and the fact that each location on the SSD is accessed at the same speed.

I think that's too small if you're going to load games, you'll fill it up quickly. I'd recommend the biggest SSD you can afford for space and the larger ones seem to perform better. Samsung 830s will be dropping in price in anticipation of the new 840s release and they are excellent drives.

The tutorial WHS referenced is a good choice and a new install will give you the best system.

If you can wait, the Samsung 840 Pro is coming out in a couple of weeks. Should be one of the fastest SSD's on the market, plus you absolutely can't beat Samsung reliability. Newegg has the Samsung 830 128GB on sale TODAY for $79.99 and that is an absolute steal.
well that IS a great deal but considering my location,it would cost about twice as much for it to reach me in one piece thats why i prefer to buy local and they still cost double.
hey guys, not sure if this is the correct thread to ask this, but after hearing quite a lot about SSD's and whatnot i have finally decided to try one out for myself. As i have never EVER tried out a SSD before,i know nothing about them other then that they are like really fast. SO for now i choose this one: 30GB OCZ Vertex Series SATA II SSD Solid State Disk for notebooks and desktops
Its available at a local shop near my place which is really rare and costs arnd 38US$ new. Should i go for it?
I will be only running my OS and the current game whichever it is im playing on it.

And anyhow, the fantastic performance of a SSD does not come from the transfer rates but from the extremely short access times and the fact that each location on the SSD is accessed at the same speed.
wow.....really? Did NOT know that, thanks :) And i have decided to wait for the new samsung 840 or whatever, better to wait a bit and invest once properly.

Great info in that case, will wait till 840's arrive and according to my budget i will get either 830 or the 840 later :D
Btw,when is it going to be released anyways?

Samsung has decided to split their SSD line in two. Their value line is called the Samsung 840, while their performance line is Samsung 840 Pro....keep that in mind when ordering. Also, according to articles and Newegg, it will launch 10/23 like Britton said. I personally don't think you can go wrong with the 830/840/840 Pro....they should all be rock-solid reliable and as fast as you need it to be. You will see and feel a huge performance increase coming from a mechanical HD for sure!
