Hum have finally ironed out a few things - the new build. Power on to login 26 secs but my WEI has dropped 0.1.

Really nice scores on the SSD though ICit2lol and congrats on the new build.

PFFFFT,,,,Really?

So I have a new notebook with the Intel 80Gb mSATA SSD II.
I set up the notebook, do all the updates, open the user account and set it up.
The notebook, Envy 17-3090NR 3D, has stock programs, nothing in it other than what came with it for HP bloatware and W7.
I shut down a lot of extra start up programs, mainly the bloatware, skype and such.

From shutdown, and boot to Windows, from the login screen is 12 seconds, AFTER, I put in my password......Not to shabby for an mSATA II SSD.

Now Get This!,,,,,I get rid of Windows Defender and install avast! Home Free,,,,,This adds approx 1.5 Seconds to my start up,,,,,,,,,,I'm OK with this, its still not to shabby at <14 Sec.
avast! has a boot time scan and its doing the scan quickly,,,,2 thumbs up for avast!

So now I add MBAM Pro, it set itself to 'Delay Start' during install, as it has a boot time scan and avast! and MBAM would really slow things down if they started at the same time, doing the same job and causing all sorts of conflicts with each other.
No noticeable start up delay here.

Sooooo, now for the firewall thingy!
Yep, Windows Firewall, it had to go and I installed Online Armour Firewall.
Great firewall, catches everything that's going in as well as OUT of your PC.
Even without a router firewall to filter anonymous pings, OA Firewall still stopped the notebook from responding, and kept all ports closed.

IT ALSO ADDED 14.5 SECONDS TO MY START UP!?

So here I am looking at a start up time of approximately 30 Seconds (+/-), the same start up time as I had with a Hitachi 750GB 7200RPM SATA II, HDD

I really don't care how fast an SSD's is, their benchmarks, whatever.
Their only as good as the software that's written and installed on them.

For the most part, I feel that software is rushed out and at best can be considered 'BETA'.....(W8!?).
I really don't think there has been any stable software written in the last 10 years,
and most of it is quite poorly written in that respect....(Vista!?).

I found this interesting explanation how Windows 8 handles defragmentation on SSDs.

In Windows 8, when the Storage Optimizer (the new defrag tool) detects that the volume is mounted on an SSD - it sends a complete set of trim hints for the entire volume again - this is done at idle time and helps to allow for SSDs that were unable to cleanup earlier - a chance to react to these hints and cleanup and optimizer for the best performance. We do not do a traditional defrag (moving files to optimizer there location for space and performance) on SSDs.

Boot times are irrelevant as long as the machine runs fast with w7 up. My reboot times are 57-68 seconds but the machine screams right along.

1) As I do malware removal at (content removed), I will tell you, you are WRONG.

2) To safely run W7 and surf the net Microsoft recommends you have a:

• Firewall, W7 has W7 Firewall, I replaced it with OA Firewall.
• Antivirus, W7 comes with Norton and a 2 year licence, I replaced it with avast!
• Anti Spyware / in the wild malicious software removal tool, W7 has *Windows Defender, I replaced it with MBAM Pro.

So, you can see that the configuration of W7 hasn't changed, just the basic security software has changed and been improved upon. The recommended configuration that Microsoft shipped your OS to you has had its booster shot, and its well immunized now.

The combination I have on my PC will NOT prevent me from getting infected, even safe browsing habits wont help. Running from a User, Limited User or Guest Account helps with infection removal, but its not going onto the internet is the main way of preventing infections.


3) My reboot was 12 seconds, and screams right along..............

* Windows Defender should be set to Disabled or Manual at Start up when running another spyware removal program such as Super Antispyware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, You can delete it as well, this is the recommend procedure. If running MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) do as the above indicates, MSE has an anti Malware / in the wild-rouge removal tool built in.

See you in the BSOD threads soon then mate. I am not wrong in saying one needs only one security SUITE, If you don't know that is a single program from one company consolidating AV, malware protection, email protection and a firewall. Comes from experience in trying to run free stuff.

Note, w7 does not come with Norton, at least my Student Upgrade version did not. If you bought a HP or Toshiba maybe they have a bundle that does.

You should consider changing 'you are WRONG' (Bold and capital letters indicate you are shouting, not necessary or acceptable) with 'this works for me'.

We (Seven Forum members) may or may not be experts, as you may or may not be an expert. What is right or the only way for you may not be the best way for someone else.

Agreed Dave but all the same I think KB is right on the money and I also think that Michael has got hold of the wrong end of the stick in his first argument.

What Britton was saying is just what KB said only in a slightly different way / differentiating / translating between anti virus and anti malware.

Personally it's my humble opinion that Michael misinterpreted what was actually being said! If he wants to find out what does happen running two AV's together try running Kaspersky with another AV and see what happens!!

Nice scores, those 830's are nice.

I'm planning on getting a 128GB before they aren't available anymore.
The new 840 is a little slower than the 830, and the 840 Pro is a little faster.
Considering the prices now and the performance is a wash, the 830 is a good deal.

Hiyya KB that Crystal tester do you find it better than AS SSD ? If you think so I might give it a burl to see if it comes up with much of a difference. As for the other mate we are all human and as such all go off road sometimes

Ho and Dave we have only just got the 840 out here is there really that much difference because it has pulled the rug out from under the prices of the 830 cos I was looking at a 256GB Plextor but eh same ime in an 830 I can get for $200 now?

Glad you pointed that out. I read the post earlier and was going to respond and got side-tracked and forgot.

The new Samsung line of SSD's come in two flavors.......the 840 and 840 Pro. They use different types of memory inside which affects performance and life cycle. The 840 Pro looks like it is going to be one of the fastest non-SLC SSD's out there, and is priced a little higher. The regular 840 will perform about the same as the 830 but with a little faster 4K Read/Write speeds.

If you don't need the fastest thing on the block, grab an 830 before it's too late. If you want one of the fastest SSD's on the market, get the 840 Pro. I haven't made up my mind where the 840 fits in, especially considering the 830 is still available. I guess if they were priced similarly, you could get an 840, but they haven't been out long enough for me to make that recommendation.

Hiyya Gary and Kelly yep just noticed the pro listing and it i $50 more than the base 840 which it self is $50 more than the 830 $275 $225 and $205 respectively (256GB)

I am actually wondering if I need the 840 as my power up to login then login goes 25 secs then 4secs on the Ivy Bridge. If it knocked off even 10 secs the extra cost for speed at this time wouldn't justify it for me but if it works more efficiently then perhaps....
