I'm sure I just got a bad one.
The 840EVO drives do have higher latency and fewer cell writes, 3000 compared to 5000 for previous generations.

Yep I know mate that works out at AUD$710 for that TB however the 250GB at AUD$216 is not that bad.

What I would lie to know is why is there a laptop and a desktop "kit" aren't they standard sizes anymore??

The 500Gb Crucial didn't seem that expensive by comparison though I like the Samsung's.

I didn't look, but I suspect the desktop kit would come with a 3.5>2.5 adapter and laptop kit a SATA>USB cable to transfer the OS. Lately the SSDs have been coming it a 7.5mm thickness to fit in some smaller ultra books and netbook, tiny laptops.

SSD's are so small and light now, you don't really need a mounting kit, you can just rest it somewhere or use some double sided tape to hold it in your chosen place.

Thanks mate I was wondering cos I saw a post I think it was in the 8 forum where someone had a drive that Asus in their wisdom had made the drive bay to take only two particular brands of SSD which I thought pretty ordinary.

Yep Paul my board has a mounting point behind the board for the boot drive but it means taking the side off for access as my HAF XM has a drop down latched side on the CPU side but a screw on the underboard side. Plus I am wary of putting it near the heat of the board to be honest.

John, I may be wrong, but I think the mounting screw holes for all 2.5" drives are the same HDD ans SSD and aren't brand specific. At least 3 brands of HDDs and 2 of SSDs I have are the same.
Maybe the same guy said that who thinks Win 8 has no need for any added security.

Well Gary I always thought so too but this machine apparently only takes two brands and I can't find the post I saw it in and besides I thought they were coming in different thicknesses now?? If I find that post I send it on.

They do, some come in 9.5mm and some are 7.5mm, I think.

Yes Steve I think I have even seen some as thin as 5mm!! But it was a spinner from Seagate and a slowy at that (5400)

I've been holding out for the right 1TB SSD instead of just using a HDD cached to RAM, and I think the Samsung Evo might be the right one to get. I also especially like the "RAPID Mode" software that caches it to RAM.
