So I just built this machine, loaded Win7 x64, and checked the performance. Seems the conventional hard drive is the only piece not in sync. So I would welcome some further information about using SSDs to improve performance. Specifically, since I have a system built already, should I add an SSD and use this just for ReadyBoost, or should I reinstall Win7 to the SSD? While 6 GB RAM sounds like a lot, PhotoShop CS5 and other graphic apps seem capable of slurping a good portion of it.

I'd like to hear your experiences with trying different Win7 setups with an SSD if you have tried more than one. I welcome hearing how this impacts gaming and Adobe CS5 apps in particular if you can speak to that.

Also, is there an easy way to specify to Win7 during installation that OS and Program Files should reside on the SSD drive, while user accounts should reside on a conventional drive? Are there still problems installing applications that expect everything to reside on a single C: drive? Which should be the focus for improvement--shuttling program, data, or both?

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Well offhand,
Yes you should put the OS on the SSD.
SSD with W7 do not require much adjustments, W7 handles all the details. Your only real choice is to decide how much to short stroke the SSD. ie: leave a percentage of it unallocated. Then theres RAID'ing them??????????
You should have the SSD plugged into the SATA 0 port and the cd rom in the last port. Have nothing else plugged at time of OS install. In bios have AHCI selected at OS install. Nothing in bios should be OC'ed.
I only know about OCZ SSD's, you do not list yours.
If you do a lot of editing, you'll want a spin drive plugged for storage of constantly changing files. SSD's have a write to disk life span, you install your static apps there and your work on the spin drive.
I do not know about moving user files around, but you can move the pagefile, the IE temp files, and other temp files off the OS drive to a spin drive.

Whatever you want to benefit from SSD speed, must be on the SSD. Keep the writes down for extended drive life.

Readyboost is software installed onto a ram stick, which then resides in a USB port, where it acts like a faster ram???? SSD's are not for readyboost.

That 7.8 for your RAM looks good, congrats.

Have you ran the memory assessment yet?

@mbreslin,

Looks very nice, except that odd looking 7.7 :p

Just want to ask here, how long usually does memtest take..

Depends on CPU speed, memory speed and memory size. I've never timed mine myself. Probably 45 min. to an hour for 1 complete pass.

NP Rafe, no reason to test if you haven't just changed something, or added new hardware. Once I had my OC set and Ram running at 1600MHz, I tested everything and when it tested good, I'm just surfing now :)

Almost 7.7! I think i did pretty well.

I was aiming for a 7.7 and can't quite get the clocking right to get both the graphics and the processor to stay 7.7 at the same time. Screenshot of both.

Any succesful overclock setitngs for a 1366 I7 930 would be VERY HELPFUL if yours scorred 7.9 thanks.

I've had a similar problem with my RAM score, must be just on the edge between 7.6 & 7.7.

There's a rumor (can't find the link) of one Processor at 7.9. Not sure if it's legit.

World Frequency Records (Intel Core i7 CPU) : 7161.88 MHz with an Intel Core i7 920.(No WEI info)

The Intel-processor-core i5 overclock to 6.92 GHz.(No WEI info)

Short story, I'ts basically un-obtainable.

My guess is Intel and AMD have persuaded MS to make the highest WEI score for processors a 7.8.
And, what a boost in sales this has created.
Just a marketing ploy.

Any WEI score for processor at 7.9 you see, just might be OC'ed by photoshop.

Current world record is CPU Overclocking Record Set, 8.20GHz

Good luck,
