nice idea, ErnieN, but i eventually found the solution.

it turned out to be due to the fact that i installed the ultimate N version of windows 7, which doesn't come with windows media player.

and guess what, wei needs a component of media player to perform its tests.

solution - either don't install ultimate N in the first place, or download the media feature pack from microsoft.

bit sloppy of m$ to not notice this unwanted side effect...

Anybody have any experience with PC Pitstop PC Matic? If so what video cards get you into the "Top 1%"?

There seems to be a bug in it too. The one thing it wants me to do is update my Audio driver to 6.0.1.6037, but according to device manager, my Audio driver is already at 6.0.1.6037. Since I can't fix that problem my "Tweak" is stuck at 4%. Also the CPU should score 12015, but it looks like it is capped out at 10000.

Yeah, I know my Internet speed sucks. But I'm going through two switches and a dedicated internet sharing PC...

Edit: Never mind. I found that I can get my GTX295's in the 3D Video "Top 1%" by simply setting my Desktop video bit level to 16 bit instead of 32 bit. Yeah it's cheating, but those green bars look better. :D

Howdy!

You've seen this right?

If you need to create a specific partition size at Step Three you just add the size in MBs like this ...

"create partition primary 51200MB" <enter> 50GB

You're right, you don't want to do a "clean all" on a drive with data on it, clean all over-writes the whole drive but the "wipe" option (Option Two) using the Partition Wizard boot disk does well and will do a single volume/partition.
As you said though, you've already done the install.

Partition Wizard : Use the Bootable CD

i'm not quite sure what you're driving at ted, the windows installer (with the 'custom advanced' option) allows you to simply format (or even repartition if you want), without worrying about windows.old detritus.

Sorry mate, I'm just rambling on, but doing a "format" does not over-write data, just marks said data to be over-written as needed. ;)

Interesting.... Gaming graphics has gone up from 3.1 to 5.5 but Aero has only taken a little boost, 3.4 to 3.6

WEI is buggy, I tell you. Surely we are not to believe your graphics card is noticeably beter, but for Aero, it's not doing a good job? I'm sure you were disappointed to have your overall score not increase to the 5.5, but I'm also sure you notice things look better and even taskbar transparency has improved? I think WEI has some sinister plan :devil2:

You can never get it high as you like, so you continue to buy new hardware. I'm stuck at 5.9 because of my drives. But I'm not sweating it, I'm happy. A Guy

Well desktop animations are smoother and almost instantaneous now, Everything looks a bit nicer (I cant explain how... its just better I cant put my finger on why though) I'm very happy with this card considering it only cost me £45. Smooth HD video, Good Gaming performance (Medium Settings on modern games, High on Older ones)

Fraps tells me that Aero is never hitting above 30Fps and its very smooth, so obviously my card can handle Aero fine. Even according to the WEI Help and Support article, a graphics score of 3 is more than sufficient for Aero

To be perfectly honest, when I bought this machine it was a very cheap budget machine with 1GB of Ram and Vista Basic. The fact that I have got it running Windows 7 with a WEI of 5 (im ignoring the Aero score, as it obviously doesnt fit in) for less than £100 worth of upgrades is quite impressive I think

The original plan, was for software companies to stick the Base score on the box so you can see at a glance if you can run it. Hence, if a game has say a minimum base score of 3 you know you can definitely run it for your hardware as long as you have all 3's. This was never really implemented in practise, but if you open up Games Explorer a lot of games have the "Minimum Base Score" there.

Anyway you have a base score of 5.9! Just look at what mine is, despite the fact it should obviously be higher! I wouldn't be complaining if I were you ;)

Yeah, but knowing they are good drives, and that lower score was meant to leave room for new technologies. It's all good :)

why does it have to be the lowest sub-score? freakin microsoft.

WEI was introduced shortly after Vista came out.
Vista was fairly resource demanding when released, causing it to run poorly or not at all on some older computers.
When people installed Vista on their older computer and it wouldn't run Aero or wouldn't run at all, this would cause a certain level of irritation and complaints.

MS introduced WEI, you could D/L it and check if your computer would run Aero and/or run at all before you bought Vista.
It was meant to be a general overall rating of old and new computers, also to be used for ratings on software and games so the user could determine if and how they would run on their computer.

It will also give you a general indication of which hardware you might need to upgrade to get better performance from your computer.

If your lowest score won't run Aero or run at all, then that is your chances of running Vista the way you want it to. So the lowest score is the most important score to determine this.

It also serves as a psychological incentive to buy more hardware;)
