found a solution.

seems modern boards, at least from 1156 onwards support dynamic vcore, on my asus board its called voltage offset.

Sp I changed to voltage offset instead of fixed 1.2v and it forces value higher than 0 unless use auto and as we know auto will set too high on a higher clock, so I set the lowest possible value which is 0.000625v. under load this now gives a 1.24v voltage (or if I set min cpu speed to 100% in power options), however during idle this is now 0.91v. My idle temps have dropped by 13C for same performance, although I will be worse off if I disable cpu downclocks in power management.

Hi wozzie, I had my i5-2550K at 5.0GHZ as a test (not stable) and my WEI was still 7.8.

I've seen Sandy Bridge-E 6 core CPU's not hit 7.9 on WEI, I wouldn't stress over hitting that number

If 7.9 isnt possible for the CPU, I would like to hit it for the memory. What kind of performance does one need to hit 7.9 for the memory? I have attempted some slight OC'ing for the memory but I have never been able to get past POST, almost everything I try it tells me my OC failed. I know I can squeeze more out of my setup because I have done barely any changes, it is just my lack of knowledge that is holding my system back. I will look into the OC section of the forums. Thanks for all the replies.

Wozzle, I think you need an older generation motherboard (1st gen core i7 9xx) that supports triple-channel setup or an x79 board with quad-channel setup.

Yes, but we was talking about getting 7.9 without any "hacks" in reg.

Anyway I have seen members with third gen. of i7 oc'd @4+GHz with 7.8 CPU score.

I really don't know how MS are planing to get that maximum score...

My CPU scors 7.8 so does my ram

I know if you change from dual to single channel it would boost it I have my ram overclocked over 160mhz from 1600mhz at one point my ram was running 1800mhz oc still never got 7.9

If someone who has the dual CPU Xeon E5-2687W Sandy Bridge EP with 8 cores at 3.1 GHz and 32 overall threads did not score a 7.9 on the CPU, I could safely say that Microsoft never intended to give any x86-64 CPU a perfect 7.9 CPU score.
