I got around to installing my new 500GB Samsung 840 EVO into my little Lenovo G570 notebook over the weekend. This was my WEI before the swap:

Curious that the Graphics score would drop 0.1 and the Memory would increase the same amount.

I just received a new 8GB RAM kit (2x4GB) from Crucial today. Here is the WEI after I popped those little puppies in:



Now, that is better overall! It's even more curious that the Graphics score jumped dramatically but the Memory score went up only by 0.1 and the CPU dropped by the same amount.

Now I won't be as limited by the number of applications I can be running at once.

Installing the SSD and the RAM was pure joy. Whoever designed this little machine had their heads on straight. All I had to do was pull the battery, loosen 5 little screws (they are captive so there is no danger of losing them), gently pry the cover off, and lo and behold! Everything I could ever need to get to is there, easy to get at.

The HDD "cage" is held in by two screws. Once those were out, the cage and HDD "slud' back and lifted right out. Four more screws backed out and the HDD was in my hand. Putting the SSD in was just as easy (I had already cloned the HDD to SSD) and closing up was just as easy.

The RAM was even easier. Once the cover was off, all I had to do release a couple of clips and the RAM module sprung up about 30° just begging to be removed. Putting the two new sticks in was just as easy.

Pity my desktop isn't as easy to work with. Working on my Lenovo makes me want to slap the clowns that (mis)designed the Acer and Asus netbooks I used to have. What were they thinking? :shock:

Jeannie that should still be a fast little machine. It is odd that a new drive would cause any of the WEI mark to change other than the drive score. What are the timings of the old and new RAM?

Over all boot time didn't change much but operation was snappier after installing the SSD and new RAM. There's quite a bit in the startup folder, even after I pared it down to what I consider to be the bare necessities, and there is a slight pause during boot for a menu screen letting me choose between going on to Win 7 or to boot up Macrium Reflect's Win PE recovery environment (more convenient than digging out rescue media).

I didn't think to check the RAM timings before swapping it out, but I ran Speccy afterward to check if everything went well and if all the RAM was being seen. I did notice the timings were 9-9-9-24—that would be tough to beat on a little rig like this; it's the same as my desktop—but didn't notice the frequency.

Later yesterday, I enabled RAPID on the EVO and things got noticeably snappier except for boot (RAPID gets loaded like a startup program so it can't affect boot). Other than spending as much for the improvements as the machine cost in the first place (ouch, but then, it's my Christmas gift to me), overall, I'm happier than a kitten under a leaky cow.

It's back in its drawer and I probably won't dig it out until the next time I go out of town.

That is a very good RAM spec. The EVO should make a noticeable performance boost. When I installed my first SSD, Crucial M4 64GB, it seemed to have better speed over several days of use, my WEI started at 7.7 and then went to 7.9.

The gpu scores changed because of the amount of memory that was allocated for the gpu. When you added the 8gb kit it allocated more for the gpu and the score shot up dramatically, good job. Working on my Dell 1525 is a real pita, memory is OK but if you need to go in a clean or replace the fan you need a free afternoon and a pocket full of tools.

My new LT has w8 so no wei. My old dell got to 5.2 with vista ultimate.

Well perhaps because my laptop and Sandy Bridge are both upgrades from 7 to 8 then to 8.1 might make a difference but I can get WEI on both.
