Bloody Big Grin
Here's mine

Five year old CPU (P4 Northwood, 3.4GHz HT) in a six year old motherboard (Acer MSI MS-6763). CPU & memory scores pretty sketchy, but WEI is all relative. OS & apps see 3.3 GB useable RAM. This system flies.

Note that I have Eve Online Quantum Rise running in the background (was not running during actual WEI test), 1680x1050x32, all the Eve eye candy turned on. Hyperthreading really comes into its own, here, and in most other tasks. Very quick & smooth.

This system also runs Microsoft WorldWide Telescope v.2.2.41.1 without a hitch. imho, Windows 7 = best of Vista & best of XP, rolled into one. Quite possibly the best OS I've ever run on a home PC, and being the good beta tester that I am, I've been providing Microsoft with constant feedback to that effect, running various old/new apps (and no, I'm not a paid shill for Microsoft - I'm an unpaid one :P ). I may hang onto this PC for a couple more years.

I also note that many of you peeps with your latest/greatest i7s & dual Quads are running the 32 bit version of Win7, which, for the life of me I can't understand, given that your CPUs are 64 bit, and that MS made the 64 bit version of Windows 7 available the same time they did the 32 bit version.

System: (archaic) Acer Veriton 7600G (AGP 8X model)
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Build 7000
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.4 GHz Northwood HTT
Motherboard: Acer/MSI MS-6763 (proprietary), 865G/PE chipset
Memory: 4 GB SuperTalent PC3200 DDR, dual channel, FSB 800 MHz
Video: ATI Radeon 3850HD, 512 MB GDDR3, AGP 8X (DirectX 10.1 & 11(?)
Drives: 2 x Seagate Barracuda 500 GB 7200.11 SATA2 @SATA-150, NCQ, (not treated to bricking firmware)
PSU: Antec 650W EarthWatts
Monitor: Hewlett-Packard W2207 22" LCD flat screen, DVI-D

"We don't need your new hardware. What we need is new software. Let this innocent
little PC live out its life!"

Pretty similar

Pretty similar to everyone else, the hard disk is my very old WD Raptor RAID 0 on the motherboard SATA controller, I saved the newer Adaptec RAID 0 array for my live Vista installation.

Looks like I'll need to invest in a newer graphics card though.

OK I admit I haven't read all the posts, there ARE nearly 50 pages of them (!) but I just ran the WEI again but had TASK MANAGER up displaying performance and at no time did the CPU load ever go above 80%.

Also it made no difference to the score whether I ran my processor at the standard 2.66GHz or overclocked to 3.2GHz which strikes me as being a bit fishy.

Anyone got any ideas on that?

Sorry for the deluge of posts, but I found something else.... my RAM is rated at 1333MHz and ran by default at 1066 as I'm using an X58 chipset motherboard.

Tweaking the RAM up to 1333MHz in the BIOS had no effect on the WEI score either.

I know WEI isn't an accurate tool per se, but I would have thought it might have had some impact. Perhaps it's a driver issue with immature drivers for the chipset which might also affect other things?

Scrooge, I'd toyed with the idea of using one of the later SSDs exclusively for the pagefile, what's your personal opinion of them, are you impressed with them?

Don't know if you'd ever considered it, but I've seen a very significant performance increase on my hard drives by getting off the integrated controllers on the motherboard and using an Adaptec SATA RAID controller instead.

It's a lot of hasssle or I would plug the old raptors into the Adaptec controller to see if it made much difference on the WEI.

i didn't try using it for pagefile . i moved my pagefile to the westen digital drive .
my system feels alot faster with the solid state harddrives .the only thing i just
can't seem to get faster is my bootup time .it still takes about 1min or more to boot.it starts booting fast but then i get a black screen and it hangs there .after the welcome screen it flys . anyway the ssd's are very fast and run very cool .

Thanks for sharing your experience Scrooge, from what I understood of the reviews of SSDs their best advantage was their incredibly low access time. On a lot of the reviews the read and write speed was beaten by some hard drives.

I figured I would try for the best of both worlds, stick with hard drives for the main storage but buy an SSD for the pagefile as that's where access time is the most crucial.

Actually that's a bit of a lie. Put simply if I had the money I'd do what you have done and go SSD and just use hard drives for storage. You might have seen but there was a new DDR2 RAM drive available now which looked very cool and is very tempting. It has a battery backup to keep the data in the RAM alive and a compact flash card reader you can back the RAM up onto just in case anything happens.

Also I saw that the latest JMicron based SSD now comes with two controllers inside and the performance pretty much matches the Intel SSD.

Odd about the boot time, is this after POST? After POST my boot time is certainly less than 1 minute, it's the POST time that frustrates me sometimes with all the RAID POST screens doing their thing, but I found it was just easier to go get a cup of tea whilst it booted up.

Scrooge, did you notice the articles going round saying SSDs suffered from fragmentation?

Sorry, I appear to have waffled on a bit.

thats me score! moving to x64 increased my score due to the limit to 3.5gb extension in x32

even at 4ghz it stays at 7.5 for cpu. but its nice and stable where its at. still need more ram tho :(
