Well... My graphics score is down by 0.1 (it's now 6.8 istead of 6.9), but with this XFX 8800GTS 512MB Alpha Dog Edition (many thanks to Everlong), I really don't mind...
picture.php

So, now I'm running a 512MB 8800 GTS as primary, and a 320MB 8800 GTS for Physx. My DX9 games didn't really change much, my DX10 games are much smoother, and I can finally turn on Physx in Mirror's Edge without losing FPS!! Hehe... This is just brilliant! I love it..

There is a prime example of how WEI lies to you! Lol.. And just cuz I can, here's the two cards I'm running now, 512mb at the bottom, 320mb at the top; sexy aren't they:

And that's where we don't agree.
I don't see the point in having windows boot fast from an SSD and having to wait "ages" for games/apps to load from a slow HDD.
Technically you'll get a WEI/usability of 7.2-7.5 because of your SSD, true, in practice it will be alot lower, 5.*, because every other thing you have installed loads from a slow HDD.
I'd rather have an overall score of 6.* with a raptor, less then an SSD but I'll have alot more usability because on a day to day basis my apps/games will load faster and that will make me alot happier then windows booting fast and whatever else I want to do loading slow.

That they sell tons is easy to explain, alot of people don't want to be "left out". It's fashionable to have an SSD.
They also don't think what they need to install, again, most will go on a slow HDD. If I didn't have the cash for an 80GB SSD, and I actually counted what I wanted to install to be sure it would fit on 80GB, I would've bought a raptor and not a 40GB SSD.

And just to make it clear, I hadn't build a computer in years (last one was a dual P2 1000 with scsi disks and a FireGL 1000 Pro GPU I used for 3D) so I did read up on the new hardware because I wanted to know what I needed and what was overkill.
That's why I have a 5770 crossfire setup and not an overpriced 5870/5970 because the 5770 CF has the best performance/price for my resolution, same for the amount of ram and the CPU.

No need to apologise for being confrontational it happens in a discussion, apart from the last comment but no hard feelings ;)

I'm not going to go back and forth, I mean you no disrespect but this is all completely wrong. This is not a subjective argument, it's easily verified, build 2 systems one with spinner for os one with ssd and test them. There are plenty videos of such tests on youtube. Anytime you run any app/game you're using a million windows dlls and other windows resources which leads to real world and easily noticeable performance increases. This is not my opinion versus yours, the sky is blue water is wet and an ssd (even the cheapest) for your os drive leads to a noticeably faster overall everyday pc experience. There are a million subjective arguments you could make such as price/gb is too high or price/usable space is too high. None of these I could argue as everyone has to decide what 'too expensive' means to them. But to say the better performing option isn't ssd for os drive is simply wrong. Your statements are simply incorrect, no nicer way to say it.

It's not fashionable to have an ssd, it's fashionable to have a fast computer.

I don't know why a person would be so against the obvious, especially when someone with actual experience is saying the opposite, not to mention respected computer hardware reviewers who give advice for a living. The guys at pcper don't work for any ssd manufacturer nor do they care what's fashionable they simply test hardware all day and report results.

That's the only argument you have: build 2 systems one with spinner for os one with ssd and test them. That's not the point, a fast loading windows doesn't represent usability/daily use. I'm not gonna argue anymore about this, you read 10 articles SSD's are faster and no matter what anyone says they're faster no matter what you use your computer for... you're right, loading a game from a slow drive is faster because you have an SSD that loads a few dll's...

1) At no time did I ever mention windows boot time, I've said before in this thread it's the worst metric for performance of all in my opinion, you spend the majority of the time using windows not booting windows I'd never even mention boot time I could care less about 20 seconds here or there.

2) I didn't just "read 10 articles". Any of my statements are easily verified by performing the test I mentioned or viewing any of the tons of benchmarks on this big wide internet. Not just "10 articles" but actual users of the hardware. Would you like me to borrow one of the new raptors just to make you a video of bc2 loading/playing from a raptor with and without ssd for os? Would you not just say I falsified results or some other nonsense. You admit to being inexperienced and say you "did your research" the fact is you either didn't try to find anything that would contradict what you already believe/can afford or your research was incomplete.

I guess i disagree due to my own personal experience.

I have a 40GB Intel X25-V for the OS/apps.

Most of my games & DATA are on spinning drives with the exception of a couple games that sit on a Vertex30GB.

Even though the Spinning drives are technically slower, overall system performance, and even those games on spinning drives showed overall improved performance.

So even though the HDs may be slower, there was still a noticable improvement in everything.

Theres simply no way I would ever return to a spinning drive (other than DATA and a few games). Even a raptor.
Once the game is loaded its mostly from RAM anyway, and most games there isnt a huge difference overall ...
At least to me
