After part 1 of install of May 2017 Windows Update, click on Restart, goes through the usual pre-shutdown updating to 30% and then into shutdown mode. But shutdown stalls.

Have tried leaving for several hours before hitting restart and also then several hours in stalled shutdown state. No joy.

Problem appears to lie with the main part of the update (KB4019264: 2017-05 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows for x86 based Systems). Have determined this by restoring an image from immediately beforehand and trying various combinations.

I've also determined that, after Trusted Installer settles down (which can take quite a number of minutes after Windows Update invites the restart), the system is seemingly idle.

Had exactly same issue on both desktop and laptop (both running Win7HP 32 bit).

If I force power down (hold power button) whist in stalled shutdown and then reboot, the Windows Update appears to complete successfully and all updates are shown as Successful in View Update History.

So, at the moment the question really is: Can I take it that all the updates are genuinely installed correctly?

Thanks, I'll take a shufty. But I wonder if that, ultimately, amounts to the same as View Update History saying it is Successful.

I thought that this might not be an uncommon occurrence and that someone might be able to say whether, once it has got to the shutdown stage, a forced power down and reboot should (as long as nothing else untoward) compete the update process OK.

One other thing I should have mentioned is that subsequently (after the update part 2 has apparently completed successfully) shutdowns and restarts seem fine.

You should be good to go if there aren't any errors and the report events indicate updates installed successfully. You can do a SFC scan to check system files. If it comes back clean, I wouldn't put much concern in the glitch (hanging process) during the WU restart.

You can also check your event viewer for anything strange during shutdown.
