Shutdown while scheduled defrag running

What would happen if you normally (not forcefully) shutdown when scheduled defrag is running? Is it okay since it knows it is shutting down? Also, how come processes such as the one for Windows Update after boot up after an update and background defrag process stay even after they are done doing their work? (Am I just looking at task manager too much...?)

There would be no problem with the defrag, if it was a normal shutdown. You would have a partially defragged hard drive and I would defrag again.

How do you know that they really are done their work? The details of this are largely undocumented so there is really no way to know for sure.

The default built in scheduled defrag task only runs when the PC is idle, and stops if the PC becomes not idle.
So if you move the mouse to click Shutdown, the defrag will stop, and restart later when the PC becomes idle again.

Well on Task Manager, the amount of RAM they use stays same and it stops writing to disk.
