...so now I have a gadget on the desktop.

What/where is the sidebar that this post talks about?

Here is some info from Vista:
Windows Sidebar and gadgets (overview)

Windows Sidebar is a long, vertical bar that is displayed on the side of your desktop. It contains mini-programs called gadgets, which offer information at a glance and provide easy access to frequently used tools. For example, you can use gadgets to display a picture slide show, view continuously updated headlines, or look up contacts.

In Vista, this sidebar automatically adjusts the width of full screened windows. (edit: at least that is what I read. It was called a sidebar dock. Perhaps I was reading about a 3rd party sidebar for Vista.)

Since the sidebar it does not natively exist in W7, full screened windows just cover up the gadgets.

Is that right? nevermind...

I never saw a sidebar on the W7 desktop. I did remote into a Vista box and the sidebar was clearly visible. I'm going to concur with MS and AddRAM that the sidebar feature is not in W7. If your trouble is with the sidebar executable (as opposed to the non-existent W7 sidebar feature), then perhaps Jambe can help you.

The windows 7 gadgets process is called sidebar.exe. That is what the op is referring too. But the sidebar does not exist in windows 7. He is still wrong because he is stating windows sidebar exists in windows 7. It does not. Gadgets are, but the process hosting them is still called sidebar.exe for whatever strange reason Microsoft decided. Sidebar is not the same as gadgets.

Anyway to fix your issue:

Try turning off windows gadgets under programs and features. And then restart. Then turn them back on and restart.

See if that helps.

And the startup programs list? (Asking for the 3rd time now) What programs are starting up with your pc?

You never stated that you tried turning gadgets off, restarting and then turning it back on. All you stated was you did not want to turn it off.
