Solved Size of files in Recycle Bin

Is there an easy way of finding what the total size is of files held in the Recycle Bin? I tried selecting all the files and right clicking on one of the files and select "properties" but nothing happens

In XP and Vista (I think) this shows in the Recycle Bin status line, but for some reason this is not included in W7.

I tried the program RecycleBinEx as mentioned in the forums but it is much more than I really need for this simple size detail.

Would be pleased if anyone has an easy solution.

Turn the Status Bar on.
Mine shows the size of all the files in it.

I've always had the status bar turned on.

All that it shows is the number of items , not the total SIZE of all the files . I note that you are using W7 Pro , I have W7 Home Premium.

In mine W7 Home Premium it does not show the total file size for the Recycle Bin.

Then you do not have the STATUS BAR turned on.

Sorry to disagree with you , but YES I most certainly have my status bar turned on , always have.

In any folder showing in Windows Explorer it just states the number of "items" only , on the status bar , NOT the total file size for the files in the folder.

As a matter of interest as you seem to infer that I can not understand this simple task , on my status bar showing at the bottom of the Recycle Bin states "65 Items" , nothing else.

In light of no other responses to my original post I'd say that is not an option to show this within W7 Home Premium , but must be able to be viewed within W7 Pro.

If you choose "details" view, you can see the file size of EACH file, but not the sum of all files.

I occasionally see the sum of all files after I hit the empty recycle bin button and I'll get an onscreen message asking if I want to delete all xxx gigabytes of data. This happens only when I have a lot of stuff in the bin, not when the sum is quite small.

It seems that the total size of all files within a folder is only shown on the status bar in W7 Pro and Ultimate.

Seems like us "average joe" Home Premium users for whatever reason Microsoft seems to think we would have no need to ever want to know that.

Looking into open source replacements for Windows Explorer.

If you want to you can try this:
1 - In Folder Options, turn on the display of hidden files and folders as well as protected operating system files.
2 - Browse to your C: drive, right click $Recycle.Bin and select properties. You can then check the size of the recycle bin!!!

Thank jacksunny, but I found an easy solution. As recommended by numerous posters in these forums , I have downloaded the open source program Classic Shell which enhances Windows Explorer in W7 as well as gives a much better (well I think so) Start Menu.

I think shootist must have applied a, now forgotten, fix. I am running Ultimate and there is no way I can customise to see the total size of the files in the status bar.
You have found a way to deal with it but, you could have a look at xplorer lite. It is a superior replacement for Windows Explorer. Unfortunately it still does not show the total size of the files in the dustbin, as it recognises them as deleted files. (o bytes), but does show this in other folders.

No it could be a because of a setting I have turned on and you don't or maybe because of the Classic Shell that I use.

I see from another reply you are using Classic Shell. Good.
Now give Explorer++ a try as a file manager. Use the nightly build.

Thanks for the tip Dave. I'll give that program a try too. Will have a look into Explorer++ also Shootist. Windows Explorer really needs more enhancements.

Wish MS would recognize the problem. I'm NOT buying 8. W7 works, why break it? Just fix it. I figure the Apocalypse (Android for desktops?) will be here before I need to buy another Windows OS.

If you want to you can try this:

Using the above solution has the unfortunate side effect of adding two system links on the desktop
if you have Show desktop icons ON.

There is another solution that allows leaving the Folder Options > View > Hide protected operating system files ON as Recommended.
In Windows Explorer, right click the drive letter and select Properties and then Disk Cleanup on the General tab.
The list of files to delete shows the Recycle Bin with it's total content size - files and folders.

This thread is somewhat out of date, but still relevant. I too was having difficulty finding the total size of all files in the Recycle Bin.
If you use the Ccleaner program and do an analysis, if Recycle Bin is ticked, it will tell you the total volume of files.
