Hi I play Skyrim on W7 64bit, 3gigs memory ,basic video card and gameplay set at low quality. I am running 91 processes in the background, my game crashes, screen turns black, (music still playing) I type in ctr, alt, del. and task mgr. comes up sometimes right after task mgr. comes up game will start but most of the time it doesn't. Then there are times where I am not even given a chance to open the task mgr. The screen turns black, no music, and I sent right back to my desktop. Any suggestions as to what processes I can disable. I use Razor to disable some but I am still having problems. I had original 60 gig Hard drive installed and the game played smoothly, but I was getting too many disk errors msg's. on the computer so I had a T.Byte HD installed and that's when the problems started. But to me 91 processes seems like a lot of stuff competing with my gameplay.

Welcome to the forums....

Thanks for filling up your system specs, this helps a lot but it will help even more if you finish it so we know the type of graphics card you have etc.

Now, first impression I would say your rig is not up to par with the game... did you check the recommended requirements for the game? going by Minimum requirements is never a good idea as most of the time it just means you will be able to launch the game ;)

Also, it may very well be that you need to update your Video and Audio drivers... go to Device Manager and check the Driver Tab for you video and audio devices, if the date is from 2013 or 14 then you just might have some corruption when installing the game and installing new drivers will fix the issue. If below 2012, then with more reason you need to update.

High Temps is very bad for a pc and not having enough ventilation inside your rig can cause the pc to freeze or shut down in order to prevent damage or further damage.

When you say you added a new drive and that is when the problems started even more... do I take it that you uninstalled the game and installed it again on your new drive?

When asking for help, don't be afraid to over extend yourself with the explanations, it is better to know more than less.

Computer was bought when W7 first came out it sits on a fan driven cooling pad, it has a Intel Graphics Media Card w/ 1309 MB total video memory, which I was told at computer shop cannot be changed out for a higher grade video card. I have 3 gigs of memory, and a dual core Pentium Processor @2.4 ghtz. Game set playing the game at low quality, I have played a total of 934 hours, and game is from a Game Disk, with DLC's from Amazon. It only started doing this after a upgrade from 600 gig hard drive to a 1 Terabyte hard drive but the ppl. at computer shop who is familiar with this game said there should be no conflict between drives.

From reading this at first I was looking at the video card which is quite low for the game but being that you said it's been playable in low quality settings that clears things a bit.

I think you may find you're need to reinstall some things a I'm not sure how the people at the computer store installed the drive. Did they clone or simply copy the contents over?

With that, backup your saved files and reinstall the game. Make sure everything you had on the game before is reinstalled as some of your saves may not work. Since Skyrim is Steam based (supposed to be), you should be able to pick up on your latest saves once Steam is connected to the internet.

Bottom line reinstall the game and see what happens.

As a side note if you start seeing issues with other stuff or games on your driver you may need to reinstall problematic software. Or worse... an OS reinstall. but let's not go there first.

BTW Is this a laptop?

I would also add, if you are running any mods at all, remove them. You dont want to run any mod unless the game completely stable in its vanilla form.
If you are, remove them and delete the ini files and reset them with launcher and redo all your settings and resolution.

Yes its a laptop it is a Hewitt Packard G60 535DX Notebook. So if I move my save file to my desktop and uninstall the game. Re-install it go to new save folder, delete it and move save folder from desktop to my Skyrim folder that should be okay right? I've done that before with Minecraft with no problems afterward, is there anything else in the skyrim folder that I need to do the same with. My mods I can do without I'll just get them again from the workshop. I thank you very much for your help as I look forward to each day and any mail I receive from you. This may come as a shock to you but I am a 62 yr. old gamer, I don't work, I draw social security for my income so I have nothing to do but play Skyrim. I started a long time ago with Final Fantasy and have worked my way up to computer gaming. I've played Lord of Ultima for about 2yrs and next month they go offline, so Skyrim has been taking most of my time. Once again thank-you for your help.

If you are, remove them and delete the ini files and reset them with launcher and redo all your settings and resolution.

I'd actually recommend reinstalling everything that was there before uninstalling the game so nothing gets broken, especially your saved games. Depending on the mod used, if they're removed, it could affect the current saved game, in that the game will complain a about a file (mod) missing.

In this instance I would just reinstall everything just to make sure the game is working. You could also uninstall stuff later.

At the OP, just save your saved files wherever and when you reinstall the game, just copy them back to that folder new save folder (the one that got installed with the reinstall).

Good luck.

Thanks again for your help, if it continues after a clean re-install I'll just buy a playstation and play the game on my big screen TV.

Not yet, but it will be a clean re-install of the game not O.S. Steam updated skyrim yesterday with a almost 4 gig update and since that update I played for 6 hours straight today without any errors. My sound which was mostly vacant during my crisis games had returned also. Usually I can't play more than 1.5 hrs before I'm thrown back on desktop but today I played for 6 hrs. before quitting. I will try again it may be a glitch with the game and the update fixed it or I could have been lucky, will find out next time I play. Thanks for your interest, and thanks for your suggestions.

Glad it worked out. And thanks for the info on the update. I'll have to give Skyrim a quick look through.

Enjoy
