Sleep Mode--how do you make it WORK?

Have never had a PC or laptop ever succcessfully go into sleep mode and be able to wake it up again without problems. Ever since Win 95 IIRC. Now using 7 and I would like it to actually WORK.

My keyboard has a sleep button. I hit it, the screen fades to black. About 10 seconds later, it comes right back on. I hit it a 2nd time and the whole PC shuts down.

On my first install of 7, I think it actually did work, it'd go quiet and even stop all the fans. Touch a key and it would come back on. Now I have to reboot it every time.

Anyone know how to make this work?

Sounds like something is keeping you system from sleeping. You can solve this with a sledge hammer..no Im just joking I'm a little bored at work today.
If you have USB devices go into device manager and make sure your USB ports are setup to let the system go into sleep mode.
Also do this for your Network card. If you have something like a torrent going the system might not sleep. You might also want to check your BIOS and make sure the settings are correct there for your machine to sleep.
I have gotten it to work correctly on Windows 7, win2k pro, and XP Pro.

I don't have any torrents running. That's the extent of what you said that I am able to check. I have no clue where to look for all that other stuff. Also I have about 20 entries under USB controller.

I can get it to sleep, but not wake up. That is, the screen lights up and that's about it. Completely frozen. You'd might reconsider wasting to much effort on this issue.

Open up a command prompt in administrator mode using the context menu -> Run as Administrator option, and then type in the following: powercfg -ENERGY
The utility will take a while to generate the report

There is no such thing as "administrator mode" in Win 7. I say that because I searched for it in the search bar and got nothing. But I typed "run" in the search bar and it let me paste it into that. As you said, it took 60 seconds to analyze, then said something else, then disappeared. So that is not much help without telling me where to go find the report.

I don't find 7 nearly as intuitive as XP was. I am constantly having to search for things that used to be very easy to find in XP. Like the RUN dialog...and My Documents...the shotest way I can see to get to My Documents is to Open the menu, Right Click on Documents, then select Open. Much more work than simply Dbl-clicking on an icon.

He means right click on your command prompt window and "Run as Administrator". You also need to open cmd.exe first then do the power -energy so the window does not disappear.

Ok, where is my command prompt so I can right click on it?

It would help if you guys would not assume I have been using Win 7 for years...I just started using this after years with XP. Nothing about this OS is easy to find.

I think, perhaps, the posters are trying to be helpful but are making you run before walking?

Have you tried setting up your Power Options?

Right click the desktop and select personalize.

Clcik the icon "Screen saver" (bottom right)
In the window that follows click change power settings
Now select "Power Saver" and "Change plan settings"

Select the time, after which, at which you wish your computer to sleep, both on power abd battery if you are using a laptop.
Remember, at this stage, to SAVE. This is important.

Now click "Change Avanced Power settings"
This will give you a list of options
Scroll down to "Power button and lid" and adjust the options you find there to you own wishes.

While on the subject. Open the device manager in the Control Panel (icon view).
Click the "Networh adapters and then right click your adapter and select properties.
Click the "Power Management " tab. Untick the square "Allow this device to wake the computer" and then untick the square above it. - This could be why your computer is waking up.

Again. "There is no such thing as "administrator mode" in Win 7"

Yes there is but it is hidden. The one achieved by a right clcik is for the local lan Administrator. However, you can enable a global Administrator like this. It will mean, however, a dual login in.
There are a couple of ways:
Open a command prompt(Run as Administrator.
Type the following command and enter.
net user administrator /active
Log out and see if you have a new alternative login, as well as your existing one. If not, do it the long way.
Shut down the computer for a cold boot. Tap the "F8" key as you are booting.
Select "Safe Mode with networking" from the boot menu.
Log into windows 7 with your personal account that holds the administrator access.
Open a command window (START--->RUN--->CMD.exe). At the command prompt type the following net user administrator /active
Log out and log back in as administrator.

Another way
Go to Start
Type Control UserPasswords2.
Click Advanced.
Click Advanced again.
Select Users.
Select Administrator and untick the the box “Administrator is disabled”
Now log out and login as Administrator.
The action leaves you a little more vulnerable to outside attack. Not a big issue if you are confident with your anti virus control etc.

I got up to here and tried it and it worked, so I didn't go any further. It went to sleep when I hit the sleep button on my keyboard and woke up when I moverd the mouse. That's what I want.

What doesn't make sense is this is the 2nd install of 7 and the 1st time it worked without me having to do all this.

Thanks!

I know this is an old thread, but it was the first thing I found when I was searching for an answer to this problem, so I am posting a reply in case others come across it.

I also could not get the computer to go to sleep, and had the same diagnostic result. (I right-clicked on cmd--or command prompt--and clicked "Run as administrator." I typed powercfg -energy and viewed the report that it produced. Like Madwand, I found a message that the Realtek High Definition Audio driver "has made a request to prevent the system from automatically entering sleep."

I found a simple solution on another site: Right-click on the speaker icon in the task bar. Select Recording Devices. In the dialog, check for any recording devices that are plugged in (that is, any that do not say, "Not plugged in"). Select the device and click the Properties button. Click the Listen tab and see if the "Listen to this device" box is checked. Un-check it and click OK or Apply. That should stop the audio manager from preventing sleep.

Just tested it, and the computer did go to sleep, automatically. I haven't seen it do that in months, at least. That was the only thing preventing it from sleeping.
