Sleepy HD

Windows 7-64. I've got 3 HD's. I notice that one of them seems to shut down when it's not being addressed. I know this because when I send something to it the system pauses and I hear it starting up and then it writes the info.

So my question is twofold. Other than the lag time, is there any potential problem for having a HD go to sleep like that? And if so, what do I need to do to keep it fully awake and alert?

Hello Durn, and welcome to Seven Forums.

This would be from your Hard disk settings in your Advanced Power Option settings. Check to make sure that you have the Turn off hard disk after setting set to Never (0 minutes).

One additional question if I may. I'm thinking of adding a 4th HD to the system. Is there a minimum power supply I need to run this many drives? And should I be concerned about the extra heat this will generate?

I have a gamer system with 12 gigs of memory, 2 video cards and one DVD/CD combo.

I wouldn't worry about the heat generated. If you are concerned, use Speedfan to monitor your temps.

I wouldn't think you would need a bigger PSU to run an additional HD, but if you are maxing out your current one already, you may need a better one.
