After my initial install, everything went fine for about a week and then the bottom fell out and was unable to effectively browse the internet, due to very slow to almost no ability to browse... my system would just hang up... read a lot of threads about this issue... Microsoft has not addressed it yet as far as I can tell; and it appears to be a very big problem... I went through and ensured all my drivers were up to date... started droppping all antivirus software trying to locate the cause to no avail... even tried restoring to earlier and the 1st restore point to no avail... I reinstalled 7 again... however, while still off the net, turned all "auto" updates off... so far so good on day 2 of reinstall... want to run the internet heavy to see if I can cause my system to slow down or freeze as before... but have not been able to yet....will keep you posted as to what is happeneing... I also understand that the 1st svc pack isn't due out until next year some time, so may just not download any updates to 7 until after the service pack is released.... Moe

when you say it hangs, can you be more specific? Is it opening, but not loading? OR is it taking forever to open. Is this IE8 you are referring to? Maybe try downloading IE9 beta. I have been using it and love it.

Sorry for lacking the more detail... using IE 8... by hanging up I mean that my browser would just go so slow it would leave you hanging with nothing happening... It happened to other browers like firefox or chrome nothing would work... I would get to a page or two and then start going really slow... Still I am using EI8 with no updates applied and all is working well... I will continue to run this for a while and maybe after a week, down load a single update to see if that is where the problem is originating.... just trying to find what is causing to help others get over the hump also...

check you're anti virus settings i often find that when my explorer hangs i put my a/v on gamer mode and the bs will stop you're anti virus probally is the culprit cause i know on certain sites it does this not all of them so i got used to the idea of just using gamer mode all the time i play games anyway and still will be protected

but i would look into changing some a/v settings then go from there also the firewall look into it

I seen that you did check the virus did you ever look into using google chrome and see if it hangs too?

...read a lot of threads about this issue... Microsoft has not addressed it yet as far as I can tell; and it appears to be a very big problem...
If anyone can complain about slow browsing it should be me. Using a 1GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, and a 1.5 Mb/s connection and IE8 on a 2 year old Vista Ultimate installation! Yet I would not say it's so slow I cannot browse effectively. My Windows 7 PC is faster. But I admit I'm sticking with 32-bit versions of everything since my RAM is still under 4 gigs.

How was Windows installed (upgrade or clean=custom)? If you have a clean install, added all the Windows updates (except the ones for drivers unless your manufacturer says it's ok to change the factory drivers) then it should work fine on a good connection. Was the Dell previously running Vista-64 with Vista-64 drivers? Windows 7 has been out for quite a while so if Microsoft hasn't addressed the problem by now it may be it's not their problem.

It may be a good idea to add the updates slowly, but keep in mind you're at risk for viruses untill all the security updates are installed. And for an anti-virus use only MSE to avoid slowing things down.

Roncerr...thanks, this was a clean install not an upgrade... I was using Vista 32 and am now using the Win 7 64 bit... I may add a 2nd update today or tomorrow and watch and see what happens.... I was using AVG (free) which does a really good job... hate to reload it for fear of bringing my browser to a stand still... will continue to tinker until I find the answer and will then post... thanks all for your replies...
