Slow game performance

Honestly, if I were you, I would really try and get ahold of MSI to figure out why you can't get their update tool to work; it would be the easiest method for you.

In the event that it just flat out won't work, what you need to do is to follow this guide step by step. Print it out so you can refer to it while flashing: How to Flash Your BIOS with Flash Drives

If you're uncomfortable, is there any way you can get your hands on a floppy drive and diskette?

I guess MSI just updated their website because the list of supported cpus now shows what BIOS version is needed. Sadly, my mobo doesn't support any Yorkfields, so i'm going to have to returm it and get one that is suported.

MSI USA – Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more

What's even worse, i can't find anything but Yorks on tigerdirect.com. i looked on newegg.com and they don't have any Kents. even if i can find a Kent, i'm still going to have to update the BIOS to 1.5.

Well, anyone know were i can find a Kent?

Oh, just curious, now that i'm planning it, how much trouble would windows 7 give me if i were to swap mobos?

I can't find any Kentsfields either; I'll look more after I run the dog. That bites about MSI not supporting that cpu.

Actually, 7 is amazing when it comes to installing a new chipset. I just went from a P-35 to a P-55, thinking that perhaps I might have to jump through the normal hoops of re-installing the OS, but nope... 7 booted right up, installed the correct drivers and that was that. A buddy of mine just upgraded from a socket 939 AMD board to an i7; he too had no problems at all... 7 is really great in that respect. :)

The only "issue" I had was that I needed to update my bios, but that wasn't because of cpu or chipset support, it was for my memory.

Wow, so i could go from my MSI P6N SLI Platinum (650i) to an ASUS P5N-D (750i) without any problems at all? i was looking at the specs for the ASUS and it supports my Q9300. depending on the price of a Kentfield, i might just end up going for a new mobo, then i could do SLI.:D

Yep, you could do that. Without "any" problems? I can't say with 100% certainty. I had to update my bios, perhaps you might too, but most likely not; the 750 is newer and supports your cpu, so the chances of you having any issues are very thin. In my case, my memory is brand new (still on the qualified vendor list), so that's why I had to upgrade the bios. It was a "problem", but for me only a very very minor one. Asus has an updater that actually works really well. I was dreading having to find a floppy drive in my pile-o-parts downstairs. :p

Aaaaaa, my thread almost got buried!

Lets say for a minute that if i get a new board, i doesn't go as smoothly as you're saying. i'm not doubting you, i'm just looking at the possibility. As we determined before, i can use the upgrade version of win 7 to completely reinstall windows from scratch, correct? i would much rather get a Kentsfield but i just can't find any, i've even expanded my search to places like amazon.com and the only thing i've found is a $300 Q6600 or Q6700! so if it comes down to it, and i need to get a new board, i need to know what all i'm faced with. you said it's all pretty much plug and play, but what about worst case?

also, could i switch from intel to amd. i wish i would have went with them in the first place because they're cheaper and better. plus ati's HD 5000's are starting to look really nice, and you get DX 11.

$300.00 for a Q6600?! i5 750's are less than $200.00.

Yes, you can install from an upgrade dvd. There are posts how to do it here, when I get back from the market I'll see if I can dig it up.

"Worst case?", obviously, that would be having to re-install your OS, but as I said, that's unlikely, even if you change chipsets from AMD to Intel, because 7 is just amazing about this stuff.

Later on today, i'm going to order a new mobo. i'll be going from an MSI P6N SLI Platinum (650i) to an ASUS P5N-D (750i). Here's a link to the new mobo.

ASUS P5N-D Motherboard - NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI, Socket 775, ATX, Audio, PCI Express 2.0, Gigabit LAN, S/PDIF, USB 2.0, Firewire, Serial ATA, RAID at TigerDirect.com

i looked on ASUS's website, found the mobo and found that my Q9300 is listed as compatible. i might still have to update the BIOS on this new board but i doubt it, you see, and i might be wrong here, i found a mobo & cpu combo on tigerdirect.com that had this ASUS board and my Q9300. why would they sell them both together it will be a head ache to get them to work together? i won't bet on it, but it doesn't make sense to sell them together if their not compatible right out of the box, ya know. the good thing is that i'm not that far into win 7 so i'm fine with reinstalling it if need be. plus i'll be able to do SLI.

in a few hours i will officially be a DIRT broke teenager yet again, so l hope this works.

If I had a problem with FPS randomly I would put it down to spyware, or I would clean my case out and take the GPU out, check it over, and if all fails then backup, and do a fresh install of windows. (:

thanks guys:D, i'll post some more after i get the right drivers installed.
