Smartcard reader issues

This is the only major showstopper for me in using Seven 95%

ActivIdentity USB Reader V2
ActiveClient 6.1

Both work fine in Vista 64 on the same box in dual boot.

In Vista the driver used is the generic MS usbccid.sys driver version 6.0.6001.18000 dated 6/1/2006

In Seven there are 4 MS drivers all version 6.1.7000.0 dated 6/21/2006:
- scfilter.sys
- WUDFUsbccidDriver.dll
- winusb.sys
- WUDFRd.sys

In Device Manager status I get the "This device Cannot Start. (code 10)" message.

If I uninstall the device and plug it back in I can see that Windows sees an ActivCard USB reader V2 (shows up in "Other Devices" while drivers are trying to install) but the install fails for the Microsoft Usbccid smartcard Reader (WUDF). I have tried the latest drivers to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated.

The new Microsoft Smartcard class driver (WudfUsbccid.dll) supports both CCID and ICCD Smartcard devices. Because of this, it does a sanity check on the device type reported by the hardware. Unfortunately, the ActivCard reader is really a CCID reader but its firmware is reporting itself as an ICCD device. Because of this, the driver failed to start. This is a known issue to Microsoft and it is being addressed. In the mean time, you may want to download the driver from the ActivCard web site instead of using the Microsoft in-box class driver.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply and at least its a known issue. I can't seem to force the install. The driver installer from Activcard is an MSI and I can't find the inf files to try to force an install.

Hmm, interesting ... The driver from ActivCard site doesn't work? In any case, you may want to try the old USB CCID driver from Microsoft Update then. This driver doesn't understand ICCD so it will blindly treat it as a CCID device which is exactly what it is.

Microsoft Update Catalog

Thanks.

Would you tell me the hardware ID of your ActivCard reader? You can right click the device in device manager, click properties, select the "Details" tab and click Hardware ID. Would you also tell me the Compatible ID from the same place? Thanks.

Here is the information:

USB\Class_0B&SubClass_01&Prot_01
USB\Class_0B&SubClass_01
USB\Class_0B

Clarification - I mistyped before. The card reader is not working on my main laptop either

These are compatible IDs, what about Hardware ID? Note that the problem of this reader is that it is reporting Prot_01 which means ICCD but in fact it should be CCID Prot_00. In any case, if you can send me your setup log file in your c:\windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log, I can get all the info from it. I am interested in seeing why the old usbccid.sys driver from Microsoft Update Cataloghttp://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=Microsoft CCID is not installing.

Thanks.

Same issue with Akasa AK-ICR-05

I have a similar issue with the internal reader Akasa AK-ICR-05, while an external reader from ACR seems to work a bit better.

According to you setup log, you have the RC build which has the fix for the ActivCard issue for the in-box class driver. The fix was basically telling the driver to ignore the device type reported by the hardware and treat it as a CCID reader. Having said that, your ActivCard's device ID is VID_04E6&PID_E000 and it does not match the ID the fix was made for (VID_04E6&PID_E001), so the in-box class driver won't get installed. Since its Compatible ID is class_ff&subclass_01, the in-box class driver won't install for this device regardless because class_ff is Vendor specific class. Class_0B is the Smartcard class. The in-box class driver will only install on Class_0B devices. However, I noticed something interesting in your setup log. It looks like the first driver installed was stcusb.sys. This driver is really for the device "SCM Microsystem SCR300" (VID_04E6&PID_1001) and should not be installed for your device. Did you force install this driver by manually selecting it? The installation of this incorrect driver happened three times. It looks like you then selected another driver "Microsoft USB CCID Driver (ActivCard SCR33x/V2)". This is the driver with the fix I mentioned above. Since the device ID did not really match. I am wondering if this driver really works for you. Would you tell me if it works? If not, what's the result? Did the device come up with code 10 in device manager? Then, it seems you downloaded another driver (scr3xx.sys) from somewhere and installed it. Then, you cycled through the above drivers a few more times. Then the device was uninstalled and PNP re-detected it, found no driver and attempted to go to Windows Update but had no network connection. So the install failed. Then you tried the above drivers a few more time and finally settled on the "Microsoft USB CCID Driver (ActivCard SCR33x/V2)". Did I get a pretty good picture on what had happened? What was the result of each driver installed? I will attempt to locate the same reader you have and see if the in-box driver will work on it.

I cannot find a reader with the same device ID as yours. All the SCR331 readers I have are with the ID (VID_04E6&PID_E001) and with the Compatible ID of (Class_0B&SubClass_00). You must have a very old reader.

And he can't just force install the the PID_E000 driver?

Just an update...

I installed RC as an upgrade to Vista Ultimate 64 and the reader works fine now with one exception:

When I insert the smartcard Win7 tries to install a driver for it but can't so it shows up as unknown, it still works fine though so I just have to deal with the "Can't Install Driver" balloon and the beeps. I'll play with it later.

And he can't just force install the the PID_E000 driver?

According to the setup log, qjammin2 did force installed the driver but his post never said what happened after that. So I assume it was still not working. However, I am interested in the "symptoms".

Are you sure this hardware ID is a Smartcard reader? Problem code 1C means it couldn't find a driver for it. Usually, Smartcard readers are either USB, PCMCIA or PCI, so the hardware ID will have the appropriate "prefix" but your prefix is ACPI which means it is BIOS enumerated. I have never seen a BIOS enumerated Smartcard reader before. Is it built-in to a laptop? If so, what is the laptop make/model?

In Win7, not only you need a driver for the Smartcard reader, you also need a driver for the Smart card itself. It sounds like the system can't find a driver for the Smart Card. What is the hardware ID for your Smart Card? You can find this info from device manager, "Details" tab and select "Hardware ID".

That's what I figured. I disabled the device (the smartcard, not the reader) and it no longer tries. The smartcard functions perfectly. The only remaining nag is that I still get the USB connect and disconnect tones when inserting and removing the card but that's OK.
