Eh, that isn't a very good argument. I mean the new OS should preform better than the previous, so it is redundant stating all of the speed increasements. Its good that there is some OS competition, so that we can gain new technologies faster.

Yes OS X is decent, but not that advanced.

Windows and OS X will always steal ideas from one another, same goes for browsers.

Personally I say Windows 7 is much more different from Vista, then Snow Leopard is from Leopard. My opinion though, haven't tried snow leopard yet so I wont know for sure.

Over time, things are going to be done more and more in similar ways for similar reasons, especially as each observes a bit what the other does and why.

If anything they're "copying" each other.

As time goes on, I expect some things like icons and wallpapers, etc., are obviously going to remain different, but it wouldn't surprise me if it becomes harder and harder to distinguish OS's over time barring potential marketing difference. (Apple targeting arts community more, MS targeting business more, etc.)

There is no way that either Microsoft or Apple can prevent each other from seeing what each does in their respective products, and use that as motivation to do something similar. The key is whether or not the underlying code is being copied. So what if the visual aspects are similar. If the code that creates the specific application or effect is copied, then you're talkin g about patent infringement and copyright violation.

Does anyone remember the DoubleSpace/DriveSpace debacle of MSDOS 6.x? When Microsoft first included disk-wide compression technology in DOS, SuperStor successfully sued them for patent infringement, and Microsoft was forced to re-write the code. This whole thing happened not because both Microsoft and Superstor had competing compression products, but in some way or another, Microsoft's code resembled that of Superstor too closely.

As far as Apple copying Microsoft or Microsoft copying Apple is concerned, I don't really think they're copying each other. They're such looking at individual features and saying: That feature will be cool to have in our next release, how can we do the same thing differently or more effectively?

That kind of behavior happens across all industries, and cannot be avoided, short of being found guilty of espionage and outright theft...

Eh, everybody copies everybody else. I could list tons of things in Vista that seems like that were lifted straight from OS X.

But honestly, I think I like Apple's implementation some of things "copied" a lot more than Microsoft's. Especially Dock Expose vs live previews. Live Previews are less useful when they are 2" wide. And quicktime's control and title bar hiding does look a bit more refined.

Now if only Apple would copy Aero snap. (Does anybody here know how that could be accomplished through maybe Applescript?) I use Macs quite a bit and have grown to be reliant on it. Probably my single-most favorite feature of windows 7.

This whole topic is silly and everyone here who says that MS is copying Apple or the other way round doesn't realize one thing;
Every big company spend enormous amounts of money on various market researches. Lets be honest they're all analysing US and OUR preferences, the market it us.
If 2 companies ask you basically the same question your answer will be the same in both cases.
This will lead these 2 companies to develop similar products that will fulfil your needs.

If MS and Apple where base one on Mars and other one on Venus, and didn't know about each other, and both were approaching a target market called Earth, assuming they've both done a proper market research, they have 98% chance of developing nearly identical products to suit the needs of the market so that the product will sell.

That's the basic lesson of marketing and it's the same for everything you can buy, cars, cloths, food & beverage, tampons, software, every single thing you can imagine.

So stating that companies are stealing from one another is just ridiculous, they are all targeting us, you as a customer and it's obvious that if the customer likes apples they will all be selling apples not oranges.
Does it mean that they're stealing from each other? As long as they are selling their own-grown apples, no.

couldn't agree more :) i work on all kind of OSs well maybe beside those new-wave linux-windows-like quasi OSs like Ubuntu or what they're called, and Mac OS will always be on the top of the list, then maybe Slackware Linux, then Windows 2000, Windows 7, FreeBSD, Windows XP, Gentoo Linux and then Windows Vista :D

I am no Apple fanboi, as most of my posts in this forum will attest to, but to claim that one OS manufacturer is stealing from another is p*ssing in the rain. They all do it. As well they should. Good concepts are good concepts. Notice how the essential desktop layout between OSX, Windows, KDE and Gnome are all essentially alike? That's because that general layout, developed over many GUI iterations by all designers have led to the current form.

I'll give a great example of good copying. Time Machine in OSX is essentially Shadow copies, something Windows has done since Win 2000. However, MS has had such a terrible interface issue, or mechanism to expose it to the average user, it was never really used well. Not until Apple "stole" the shadow copy idea and put a fantastic UI to it. Vista and Win 7 are finally making better use of the concept, but they still lack the finesse of the Apple designers. Do I care that Apple stole shadow copies? Of course not, and I'm glad OSX users have a great file back up and recovery system.

There are many who say the Win 7 taskbar is stolen from the Dock in OSX. I can see some similarities. Do I care, no, because I like it.

I wish Apple would stop the stupid "Redmond, start your photocopiers" type crap, but it goes in line with their dishonest marketing method. Just know that there is plenty of stuff in Windows that came from Apple and OSX has plenty of Windows stuff.

The best attitude :) In the end it's all about having a choice.

I wish Apple would stop the stupid "Redmond, start your photocopiers" type crap, but it goes in line with their dishonest marketing method.

There is no such thing in the marketing world as dishonesty.
Bare in mind that the 'photocopiers crap' has roots way way back in history and let's be honest Apple when it comes to license matters was right.
Shame only that the same Apple did exactly the same thing with Xerox and never had a problem with it... But that's life...

Just know that there is plenty of stuff in Windows that came from Apple and OSX has plenty of Windows stuff.

Generalization but damn true :)

I think you have a point, that market forces push features to come out at similar times across products, and technology advances to allow features to come into place at certain times (e.g., spotlight, windows start menu search would not have been possible until certain hardware advances made it feasible).

But, having said that, there are plenty of cases of more blatant copying. (e.g., Vista's Windows Mail is almost a straight ripoff of OS X Mail, same with ical , although everybody seems to rip off ical)

Funny video illustrating my point: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaIUkwPybtM"]YouTube - Windows Vista did not steal ideas from Mac OS X![/ame]

as always it's the matter of the source code... only a direct copy of the code or it's parts is a rip off... other then that these are all 'coincidences' ;)
