the thing i remember best from this conference is the bit about the new windows logo you can see behind Jobs, there was an animation in which this bubble that surrounds Win logo started fading and Jobs said something like this; If you look at the new logo and take the bubble away it's still Windows

But, having said that, there are plenty of cases of more blatant copying. (e.g., Vista's Windows Mail is almost a straight ripoff of OS X Mail, same with ical , although everybody seems to rip off ical)

Huh?? Vista's Window Mail is a direct evolution of Outlook Express, which first made it's appearance in 1997 as part of IE 4. The code base has continued from Outlook Express to Vista Windows Mail to Live Mail. I would find a better example.

You're right, I was thinking of calendar, and got mail conflated with it in my head somehow, but look at screenshots of leopard and vista mail apps, the button and control placement are near identical, and the visual style is uncanny (triangles on lists). You'd think they were the same app, just on different OSs.

Though Live Mail is radically different.

Actually, "Windows Mail" (and by extension "Windows Live Mail)" are completly new programs with nothing in common to "Outlook Express" other than they are both email clients.

One just needs to spend some time comparing the two to notice the was number of differences between the two. But for me, here are the most important:

1. Multiple email accounts no longer dump all incoming mail into a single inbox
2. EMail folder like Inbox, Sent Items, etc. are not each stored in single files (*.dbx). Instead, the folders displayed in Windows [Live] Mail reflect files and folders stored on the hard drive file system, which makes it a snap to backup email.

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure that Windows Mail was a huge re-write, but the core program is based off of OE. The added the JET database and the junk filter, but the mail and news code is based on OE code. Live Mail is a new program originally written as a Hotmail frontend.
