Getting OSX86 and Windows 7 to dual boot can be a real pain but if you really want it then it can be done just fine with a fair bit of time spent. I have both running just fine on my Acer Aspire 7720G Laptop.
I only have one problem and that is the built in WiFi is not working, appart from that all fine.
I am lucky because the acer lets you put a second HDD in the machine so while attempting to set up OSX you can remove the Windows boot HDD to save messing up the MBR, that is easily done and a real pain to put back and saving data. i think I must have done about 20 full installs untill I got it just right. Now all I do is change the drive i boot from when i boot so that i pick between OSX or Windows 7.
Also point to note the new Camelion 2 boot loader is really great as it will pick up every type of opperating system on any HDD within your system and allow you to boot from it. (OSX, Windows, Linux etc.)
ok getting back on topic.
it is not really possible to say 100% what the best opperating system is but if you want an opperating system you can really play around with and configure from the ground up and find a million things hidden away then it has to be Windows every time as it has to be like that as has to run on the most diverse hardware.
if on the other hand you want a nice looking op that is easy to use and needs very little configuration (in general not taking into account trying to get it up and running on PC hardware) then OSX wins hands down. if you like to play around though you may find you get bored very quickly.
OSX will never support the amount of add-on periferals Windows does as many hardware manufacturers just don't produce MAC based drivers.
You have to remembr years ago (late 80's, early 90's) the MAC was the best machine in the publishing market and without doubt the best in the music production market, and although still arguably the case now (mostly because people in the buisiness started out with MAC's so tend to try and stick with them), this is just not the case as basicly anything you can do on a MAC or OSX can be done just as well and sometimes better within Windows. That said it is also applicable the other way round.
the only thing that is sure is that if you buy your software from the normal software outlets, then software will not only be more expensive usually on OSX for comercial software, but will also be that much harder to aquire. most high street stores just do not stock that much software for OSX platforms.
I would love to use my laptop fulltime running OSX as i find it slightly more reliable but at the end of the day i always find myself going back to Windows and really everything I do is within Windows. i started out in my working carreer in publishing and printing so everything then was Apple MAC based. I have also been heavily involved in music production over the years and indeed we used to own James brown's old studio in Stratford, London and most of the music was compiled on Apple MAc's. So I have a good understanding of OSX but now and as of the last 10 years I only really use PC's and Windows based systems as i find them the best all round machines for doing everything and the best value for money. I have been a network speciaist for the best part of 20 years and have held a PhD in computer science since 2002.
Windows 7 is and will be the opperating system of choice and there reallyshould not be this debate. It is not really fair, it would only be fair if both systems ran exactly the same software and were 100% compatible but they are not.
Ps. Sorry for any mistakes in this as it is 6am and just about to go to bed. lol
Night all.
