Ive just made Chrome by default browser. Ive been testing various browsers recently including avant, maxthon, opera and of course firefox. I have to say that chrome is pretty fast on here. Im using the 2.0.172.8 build.

I dont need to worry about adverts either as Ive set up an ad filtering proxy on my shell account.

So in order to replicate one of FF many features, you have to go through a proxy, hence removing any speed benefits you might get. Pfft.

nope, no speed loss, pages still load the same. The proxy is one ive compiled myself on my linux shell which is in the same country as me.

Still an extra hop isn't it? It'll add quite a few ms to response times at least.

You may have speed loss... maybe not really significant for you but while the data get through your proxy, being filtered and cam to your computer it's take time.
As the speed difference between to webbrowser is totally insignificant the tiny gap you add will conteract the benefit of the "speed increase" of one brower over the other.

I did try chrome. I liked the memory management, but aside from that, meh. I didn't like the google updater that came with it and sat in the background all the time, and aside from that it just felt like a featureless beta.

Besides which, I really cannot go without my FF add-ons.:geek:

Well I just gave it a spin and two sites I visit a lot didn't load as they should, I admit it's fast but couldn't notice a difference between chrome and firefox so....uninstalled and back to firefox :)

Actually you have to be careful with those stats as you can present your Browser to show an alternate name. For example using Linux KDE Konqueror you can set it to present itself as IE7 for stat purposes etc. but your stats are a good OOM (Order of Magnitude) result.

You can even tell it to present the OS as Windows.

Still interesting all the same.

Cheers

IE8 is very close to FF3, i would of thought the gap larger.....

i tell you what though i fired up IE the other day & i have to say its far more responsive than FF3, i was shocked at what i had got used too..... though i dont like the tabs :(

if i wernt so stuck in my ways with FF3 i'd probably switch..

i used chrome for a while but in its infancy it was lacking a few vital options, they may have been addressed now though.

You could probably use something like untangle to take care of the adds www.untangle.com. <<<<and it is totally FREE. I use it, and it is awesome. It's like seven servers on one machine. I IE8, but I wish they had a speed dial like FF3 does. That speed dial is really kool. One of my co-workers came by my desk, she taught I was watching a bunch of monitors like a security guard, lol.
