Agree that avoiding Registry Defraggers on Win 7 for the time being is sensible.
I tried Glary & Advanced System Care free (sole OS is Win 7 64-bit) had to do a system restore in both cases.

I know this thread is about software to avoid but this is just to report that Registry Clean Expert ( Registry Clean Expert) works well for me under Win7.

Gigabyte case... can't seem to identify it =/ was only $65 with 550w PSU and front side temperature OSD

My CPU sits around 50-55*C when stock, OC'd it goes to 55-72*c.
I know that's rather odd however, usually stock cooling won't handle a 25% overlock. Maybe it's just the C2D's capability.

Did your CPU, RAM and Vcard check out ok after Sandra?

I have one core at 31C while the other is at 36C from running all day and night. 50-55C even with a stock hsf running stock is a bit warm there.

Really? I just ran CoreTemp, 1 core at 60*C other at 55*c.
The temperature inside my case is 25.4*C =/

So the stuttering problem i have in games is more likely to be a dodgy CPU rather than my mobo eh?

I've been in I.T for 10 years odd, but because i rarely bother keeping parts to interchangably swap for testing, my hardware diagnostics ability is pretty crappy lol.

Every customer i've dealth with so far has had an easily diagnosable problem like PSU, RAM etc... i'm good at diagnosing hardware faults BUT this particular fault i've never even seen before.

I don't get any kind of delay or stuttering in windows, just in games like call of duty, counter-strike etc. Tried updating all my drivers, BIOS, even did the DX10 hack install on XP. I got better performance, but overall the stutter still happens for 1-2 seconds every 5 minutes or so.

Well running higher cpu temps when only then placing any good load on it can explain a good number of problems! I had one old case here with an 80C threshold hit the 70s when not having something working.

Any game or app at some point would crash! crash! crash! out of nowhere when the cpu fan quit. I bought a better one to bring those temps down as well as a few larger case fans.

I'm going to add Corel WinDVD 9 to the list. Not only is it a bugged mess on Win7, it's draconian registration and protection methods are a nightmare. It's rent-ware, they'll take it away from you if you install it too much. No thanks.

This was tested on 7057, RC and now 7127 x64.

$80 for this and I couldn't get to play anything. Refund? Ha, Corel don't have that word in their dictionary.

It's monstrous bloatware, to be avoided, as with most Corel products.

That sounds like a rip-off. So far theyve not made Paintshop Pro turn like that.

One old program to be replaced by a newer version at some point is the NeoDVD 4.0 standard. That actually will work on the 32bit 7 but no go on the 64bit with the usual "failure to initialize" error. One thing it isn't to note here however is that it's far from any bloatware like Roxio! I still have to see what happens when trying out an older Easy Media Creator version that I spent $100 some time back!

I'll be looking at a trial of the latest 7.2 to see how that goes since the 64bit won't run the older version that came with a video capture device I had here. The drawback maybe overcome for the 64bit Windows with the latest.

That's a warning in case someone asks why the 4.0 won't work on the 64bit side of life. The good news is that the latest 7.2 version even while a trial until ordered is just the opposite! It burns 10 times faster and works like a champ on the 64bit! Now you have one for the "good software" thread!

I thought it would be a good idea to make a list of programs to avoid because of either compatibility issues or they screw Win7 up.

a few ppl have said this but i've used nero for years, using 9.0.9.4.b atm and it's fine. i don't install recode, the photo viewer and the rest of the crap but for burning never had a problem.

I noticed that too. I have installed the free version, it but I am not game to run the registry cleaner given all the problems I had after running Glary Utilities registry cleaner.

Some-one else on this forum also said don't run the network optimisation in ASC either.

Don, I have tried Kaspersky 8 as beta in 64bit Windows 7. I drained my browser, then I tried to install firefox to see if it would be any faster, yes a lillte faster, but not the way Firefox usually is.
It helped though to turn Kaspersky's firewall off and use Win7 buildin firewall, but that seems odd to me.
Right now I'm on a test with ESET 64bit edition, and it seems to run smooth compared to Kaspersky, and ESET should be as good as Kaspersky when it comes to security, I think.
