sorry i'm new, but what is this? does it mean that if i have these programs, i won't be able to run windows 7? i plan to get the windows 7 upgrade tomorrow to upgrade my vista.

A safer route is to do a clean install of Win 7, thus creating a dual boot Vista/Win 7 system.

This and other threads here are littered with the sometimes disastrous outcomes of people using various registry defrag and registry clean up tools.

The best advice is DON'T USE THEM.

The info is:

• Many - even most will cause you grief
• there is no evidence that a registry defrag is of any use whatsoever.
• there is minimal evidence that a registry cleanup tool is of any use except in some very specific cases thus very occaisional use may be OK (say 6 monthly)
• you will not get any or any measurable "speed" increase

The registry is crucial to your OS. Microsoft neither provide nor offer a registry defrag or cleanup tool. Why would that be? (rhetorical).

Whoops lol. I got smart defrag by iobit off of download.com because cnet wrote a review of it and said it worked pretty well with windows 7. That might of caused a problem because my openoffice.org software wouldn't open. Hmm....

Any Registry Defraggers
They generally cause a boot time bsod and system restore or startup repair cant fix the issue. Usually requires a complete reinstall of windows.

Well Auslogic BoostSpeed 4 reg. defrag is working fine and i tested
TuneUp 2010 RC2 and its reg. defrag is good too!
Any newer reg. defrag is ok!

Net Limiter causes a BSOD after restart on W7 7000 64-bit.

Yea, they mentioned the whole program working well with windows 7. It is a great registry defrag, one of the few that actually work well with windows 7 from what the review said. Check it out. It is by iobit and called smart defrag.

Smart defrag is excellent but it's a drive defragger - didn't have a registry defragger last time I looked and if it does
I say again:

dont use registry defraggers

useless, not worth the risk! (imo - but look at the amt of grief a range of them have caused!)

I would add Webroot Desktop Firewall 5.8. You can't remove it from Windows 7.

May I suggest that as a new OS we should just run 7 for about 6 months and not tweek it extensively until it has had a chance to soak. By then there should be a good number of updates, maybe a sp1 and we will have had a chance to try apps that have been advertized as compliant with 7, and tried out by folks here and reported on. As for defraggers, why are folks defragging already?

Nor do I see a problem with Advanced System Care Free or Pro versions from Iobit. This is a program I use often as well.
EnhanceMy7 is not good for your installation... at all. So agreed there.

Hi. Anybody using Comodo firewall? I've looked here and the other software stickies and can't see it mentioned anywhere.
It has a good reputation but is it necessary?
I'm currently using Avast and have been since W7 beta and I've had no problems.

Comodo Firewall is awful. I used it for awhile a few years back. It's impossible to figure out how to control outgoing apps/processes. It doesn't even seem to be capable of doing it.

Use Avira Antivir Personal for viruses and malware.
Use PCTools, PrivateFirewall, or ZAP for firewall.

Software to avoid: Anything by Comodo. Their virus profram caused conflicts with Office )7. Their firewall doesn't have anything to block outbound connections.

Photoshop, earlier versions, on 64 bit Windows 7

I haven't read all the posts in this thread, so this may be old news:

Earlier versions of Photoshop will not install on 64 bit Windows 7.

This is because the earlier versions have 16 bit installer programs that won't run on a 64 bit operating system.

I know for a fact that Photoshop 4 won't install on 64 bit from personal experience, but it works very well on 32 bit. That's why I am using 32 bit Windows 7.

I think the cutoff is at Photoshop 7--you need a newer version than that, which I think means the CS series. They have 32 bit installers.
