Some of my Desktop Icons Disappear

I have changed some of my Desktop icons. The original icons came from the Control Panel or Devices and Printers. At times, they just disappear from my Desktop. Is there a way to lock them on the Desktop? Thank you..........

Some people refer to desktop shortcuts as icons.
