Some question's about my connection type

Hey everyone
So I use Windows 7 64-Bit Professional.
I have a ADSL modem/router (Im not sure) and it is connected with wires in the main computer which belongs to my dad.
I use a NIC to connect to the internet but I don't like it!
I dont get full performance from my internet and I pay for 10MBPS (about 1.2 MBPS downloads).
My other friend also have a 10MB speed connection but he is connected with the router. So when ever he download's stuff he get's 1.2MBPS speed download and I get only sometimes and also I need to use Internet Download Manager for that. He uses FireFox to download and he download's on full speed (I can't do the same. Only by using Internet Download Manager).

So I'd like to make my wireless connection to a wired one. A one the will probably give me the same performance like at my friend's computer.
How would I do that?

Actually I can do whatever I want without my dad's permission because he doesn't really "connect" to these whole thechy stuff.

I love you know how to change the QOS router limiting. What what will this effect?
Also I have only 4 Bars out of 5 in the wireless connection. If I change the bandwith will it be effected?
