Hi to everyone,
I cannot find graphics drivers that will fully install for my Sony Vaio Laptop.
The model number is VGN-AR71ZRU
My operating system in Windows 7 x64 bit
The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT GPU (sony website showing as 512mb)

The official sony link for my laptop is
VAIO : Sony Europe
The Nvidia Link is
NVIDIA DRIVERS 258.96 WHQL
if i go to device manager, i get a standard vga card

Mobility modder allows me to install a driver but after restart, i still get a standard vga card in device manager..

If i go to standard VGA Graphics Adapter properties, click details, hardware ids, i get the following

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0407&SUBSYS_9016104D&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0407&SUBSYS_9016104D
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0407&CC_030000
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0407&CC_0300

I have seen on some threads that a custom NV_DISP.inf is made, which i dont have

Can someone here assist on what to do

Thankyou

Hi stormy13
works a treat.
I can now right click the desktop and access the NVIDIA control panel.
Device manager also now shows the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics card
I now got windows mobility centre to adjust the brightness too (not sure if that was there before)
many thanks and much appreciated

Hi watdahell02.
I went with stormy's link.
Dont forget to get the hardware id's explained in the start of this thread.
If you search about you can get the fn+f5/f6 keys to adjust the screen brightness too. You should get a link to a vista 64bit driver which works for me

I think this is a growing trend ,problem alot of people updating to win7 32 or 64 are having video adapter /card fail due to lack of drivers available

There are other post that suggest window updates but yet people don't understand if it was that simple they wouldn't be comming here windows updates don't fix everything

I completely undestand win7 though is the best OS you're going to get vs XP pretty much just because it imitates XP it is still it's own platform but with me saying this

windows should have a detailed list of what hardware can be supported basicly if this continues people will be forced to upgrade thiere hardware as well instead of just the OS which is seemingly being the case

I have seen more video card purchasing due to driver fail then i have seen in a while is that the secret? for microsoft success stuff the old cards for new one's simply cause of direct x 11 if someone agree's or have something to go on please share

The problem in this case is that there is zero reason for there not to be a driver for those 8400M/8600M equipped laptops other than Sony being "youknowhats" and not providing them. Nvidia has had drivers for all of their DirectX 10 cards since Windows 7 came out, only problem in the case of most laptops is that it is up to the laptop manufacturer to mod them to work on their laptops.

The reason that the reference Nvidia drivers (same goes for certain ATI mobility GPU's as well) is that there is no DevID for the GPU in the INF. The INF (and possibly more than one) needs to have the DevID added to it for the driver to install and work, hence why the one(s) from laptopvideo2go work with pretty much any and all Nvidia laptop GPU's; or in the case of ATI, Mobility Modder from HardwareHeaven and you do the mod yourself.

In addition to the DevID the laptop manufacturer's also mod that or a different INF to work with whichever display is on the laptop and whatever power scheme (if any) they have added, or extra functionality from some of the F keys as gurudave mentioned.

I have seen more video card purchasing due to driver fail then i have seen in a while is that the secret? for microsoft success stuff the old cards for new one's simply cause of direct x 11 if someone agree's or have something to go on please share

Seeing as Microsoft neither makes the hardware nor writes the drivers, you can't blame them for lack of support. You also can't expect the hardware manufacturers to continue to support old products indefinitely, somewhere along the way you have to draw the line.

You are right about microsft not thiere fault but this is kinda rediculous to see the issues that are showing up but yet again nothing is ever perfect

I can't complain though win7 has been great for me actually

you need to go to the start menu, right click computer, click-properties, click-device manager, click the little arrow by display adapters, and you'll see standard vga or something like that open up....right click that, click-properties, click the details tab, from the drop down menu by property, click on hardware id's and i used the first line of that information for Stormys link. Stormys link to the website does freeze for a while, but be patient and it will unfreeze, then you will find a link to your requested driver

And yes i agree, windows 7 is so fast, it makes pentium 4's run faster and my laptop was running vista and it is so much better. Pitty about the driver issues with windows 7 and hardware manufacturers, esp for the non-technical users/consumers !
