Sound driver problem on XP

I hope someone here can help with this. It's regarding the highlighted entry in the attached screenshot.



The driver shows an error but I can't seem to fix this. None of the right-click options do anything. I can't install a new driver, I can't update it, I can't uninstall it... WTH?

How do I fix this please?

Do you now what Net card & Sound you have?

Your Acer Aspire laptop uses the Realtek Sound card, these are the drivers you need for XP Acer Aspire 7720G Windows XP & Windows 7 Drivers | Laptop Drivers Download

Both your soundcard and network adapter drivers are listed on the link I provided, Sound=Realtek, Net=Broadcomm

I tried that Realtek driver but it won't install I get the following error:



That by the way is the same driver that's found on the Acer website (which also doesn't work). Really baffled but need to get this working.

Do you have Ubuntu, Win XP ,& Win 7 installed on your Acer 7720G? if yes

Thanks Theog but the problem here is that is won't install anything. I just get the same error message shown in post #5. Maybe I need to force install it...

SOLVED!

1) I uninstalled everything to do with audio/sound in Control Panel ---> Add/Remove Programs.

2) Disabled then uninstalled Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for HD Audio in Computer Management ---> Device Manager ---> System Devices.

3) Rebooted.

4) Extracted swmidi.sys from \\C:\windows\driver cache\i386\sp3.cab to \\C:\windows\driver cache\i386

5) Installed Realtek HD Audio Driver et voila! I have sound!
