Hi,

I have the following problem with new Compaq 515 with Windows 7: when headphones are connected to the headphone jack, the laptop speakers will not disable and headphones or external speakers woun't work.

The laptop recognizes headphones (test sounds are coming through) and they can be used for communications, e.g. Skype. The laptop has IDT High Definition Audio CODEC driver's latest version.

Strangely, it is not possible to switch headphones as default device in control panel -> sound. The laptop has following options: Speakers/HP as default device and Headphones (RTC) appear as "Default Communications Device" when selected as default device. I'm not sure this is the problem but it seems strange enough.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I recently discovered the solution that worked for me. For the longest time any time i got a skype call the sound would cut out of my headphones and go through my speakers, while the skype call took over my headset. For the last 4 months I just left my speakers disabled, which sucked because I couldn't hear certain applications like Second Life.

The problem is not Windows 7 exactly, but skype. On the toolbar for skype select Tools>Options. From there General>Audio Settings. On the Speakers section select Speakers and Headphones (IDT High Definition Audio). Before I did this i had it set to communication headphones and this apparently was causing the problem. Hope this helps!
