The first thing I see is you have "High Definition Audio" device which suggests you just have the basic function Windows installed audio driver and not the correct RealTek audio driver from Gigabyte.

If this is the case, the first thing to do is install the Gigabyte provided sound driver, which is a full feature driver. The vendor's driver is the preferred sound driver. This may not fix the problem, but its a needed start.

OK Thanks, I think that it is a DVD Player issue, the test tone feature cuts out which suggests dodgy connection, will keep you informed.

Steve, when you say sound card, what card are you referring to?

That video card has HDMI sound [referred to as: High Definition Audio Device], but it's not a sound card replacement, you have to get it from the audio on-board the motherboard, or have card in a PCI slot.

Your listed specs aren't showing an actual sound card.

And that driver as fireberd said is what is key, you have some form of ALC-8xx series made by Realtek, they seem to have a monopoly on on-board sound chips and in Windows 7 make sure from Playback devices the Realtek is selected, if it's not there the driver is absent. [right click volume icon in task tray and select playback devices] and check under Sound devices in Device Manager, all should be listed there.

Start | <in run box> put Realtek, if Realtek HD Audio Manager is in results you have previously installed the driver and that is the tool for main settings.
