Sound plays through both speakers and headphones

Like the thread title says, I plug in my headphones and listen to them quite happily but then wait, oh no, the sound is still playing through the speakers! I've had this laptop for over a year now, upgraded to W7 when it came out; this is my first issue with it.

I've had a look at sound in control panel, which lists four options to set as default.
1) Speakers + Redirected Headphones (currently default)
2) Independent (R.T.C.) Headphones 1
3) Independent (R.T.C.) Headphones 2
4) Digital Output Device (SPDIF Out)

I have tried using headphones with all four of these as default. The only way I can get any sound at all is to use the first option.

The laptop has two headphone jacks in the front, as well as a front/back/side set up at the rear of the frame, for external speakers I assume.

Please help!

I tried putting my headphones in one of the rear ports, which has fixed the problem. However, if anyone could offer advice on how to make it work through the front headphone jack I would appreciate it, as using the rear one is a bit of an inconvenience.

Have you tried re-installing the driver?

I did reinstall the driver, which made it work at the time. But the next day the problem was back, which was what prompted me to make this thread.

And now I feel silly because this morning the problem has decided to go away, but for all I know it will be back next time I go on my laptop.

Merrrrr I don't know what to do. For now I'm going to leave it. If it's still persisting in a few days from now I'll try to fix it again. Until then I'll just put up with it.
