Sound proofing

Hey,

I have an Antec 900 gaming case at the moment, had it for a while. Sometimes it can be a little loud and can be annoying, so i'm looking to sound proof the case.

Are their any recommendations for the Antec 900? or where can I buy sound proof kits from in the UK?

You cant really sound proof it. The more you insulate it the hotter it will run and the only way to "soundproof" it would be to cover the fans which isnt recommended.

What is loud? the fans, HD's, etc?

Check in your bios for hardware monitoring options.

Look for options to slow the fans down to silent or quiet mode.

The fans on that case have controllers. If you want the bios to control the fan speed, you must move the controllers to 'full' speed.

If you do not want the bios to control the case fans, adjust the controllers to a slower speed.

You have 3 120mm fans and 1 200 mm fan in that case. It should not be making any sound at all.

What kind of CPU cooler do you have? Does it have adjustable fan speeds?

What kind of power supply do you have?

I know about the fan controllers, I've set the manual switches before, I believe they are set at medium now with the top fan at low.

Buy quieter fans (roughly $50 for high quality ones for the whole case).

Sound proofing = heat

Have you put your ear down there to determine which fan is loudest?

Usually the loudest is the GPU fan. you may be able to control that with software. is it ati or nvidia?

The CPU fan/cooler looks adequate. Check your bios for monitoring options.

That case was designed for maximum cooling. The front is nearly open, so its not advisable to black any of that flow off.

Bigger, slower rpm fans can move as much air as smaller higher rpm fans but are quieter. I see the case has mostly large fans. If your CPU cooler fan is the culprit, does your CPU cooler use a small fan? A Cooler that can accommodate a larger PWM fan might help.

Suggest Noctua fans but many quality fans available they can be run wide open and still be silent. As mentioned the CPU could also be loud but start with only the three 120mm and be amazed. The 200mm top fan isn't a worry unless a bad bearing. If still too loud then blow out the GPU as it likely is running too fast to stay cool, same with CPU.

I've got an NVIDIA 9800GTX+ but i've just bought a Asus NVIDIA GTX 460 OC.

I'll have a nose about when I get the new graphics card and give the case a clean while I'm at it.

Just as another reference, I keep CoreTemp open so I can check Temperatures of the CPU. Temps for the cores are around 30C-45C idle. Playing a game maybe around 45C-65C. Can't see because I'm not at the comp right now.

I really like Sharkoon Silent Eagle fans. They are very quiet yet shift a lot of air with golfball finish blades

Definitely invest in "quiet" fans. I was able to reduce a lot of noise by using rubber washers where ever I could. But the biggest noise maker was my PS fan. I have a friend that actually used spray foam insulation on the cover of his case in an attempt to quieten his computers....I wasn't surprised when his system overheated and he fried my MB...so I would n't recommend going that route
