Sound Recorder isn't Working Properly

I often use the sound recorder to record music because it is crystal clear quality (and my television is not), but just recently, the sound recorder hasn't been working properly.

I'm not the brightest when it comes to computers, so please bear with me.

The problem is that the sound quality is now absolutely horrible. The sound level is sky high and regularily fluctuates, there is a bit of static in the backround, and the sound is a bit distorted (almost like a bad techno band made the remix).

I tried messing around with the options/restoring defaults, and checking the FAQ's and troubleshooting, but nothing seemed to work.

I use AV cables and an adaptor to connect the television sound to my laptop.

Any thoughts?

Even when both the sound recorder and TV are on mute, I can still hear what would regularily be going on on my TV.

And I don't use a mic, I use the AV cables and an adaptor to hook the TV/playstation to my laptop.
