Sound through jack output works randomly

Hi all,

Most of the time, I can't get any sound in my headphones. Sometimes it works, though, depending on Windows's launch. I mean, if it works, it will work flawlessly as long as I don't restart my laptop.

Config:
Toshiba C660-2D6
Windows 7
Realtek HD Audio
NVIDIA HD Audio

I have the latest version of the Realtek driver installed, yet Realtek Manager doesn't detect my headphones plugged in. They actually don't even show up in the sound devices window, even when sound works through them. I have screen captures available of what the software says with headphones jacked in, but I can't get them show up here. The "Insert image" thing doesn't seem to work. Here are the URLs anyway:

Realtek | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Gest_son | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I only have this problem with Windows. I have Ubuntu installed in dual boot and sound works perfectly, both in speakers and headphones. So, I know it is not a hardware problem. My wife has an ASUS with Realtek and NVIDIA installed as well but with old drivers, and she doesn't have any problem.

Any help appreciated!

Oh, sorry about that! I'm French, that's why!

Nope, I'm using this one : Realtek HD Audio Driver R2.73 Now Available

I tried and installed the one you mentioned, it didn't work. Besides, it is outdated. I also tried the previous version - R2.72 - of the one I've just posted in the link above. Didn't work either. I'm kind of stuck with this crap here and it is pretty annoying since I want to work on music writing, among other things.

You might need to use a tool like driver sweeper to get rid of all Realtek components and then reboot before installing those drivers that you linked will do anything.

use this Guru3D - Driver Sweeper but make sure you only sweep realtek stuff. and uninstall your drivers first then reboot then run that then reboot and install new ones.

So, Driver Sweeper doesn't exist anymore. It has been replaced by a Display Driver Uninstaller, but it wasn't really the point since my display is ok so far ;)

I've found another driver uninstaller, Driver Cleaner Pro. I ran it after uninstalling all Realtek-related things, and now I'm re-installing the latest audio driver. I'll see how it goes.

Also, I have experienced the same problem in Ubuntu one or twice lately, so I suspect the Realtek sound chip on my motherboard may be the trouble maker. What I don't understand is why I almost never have sound in my headphones on Windows, whereas I have it 99% of the time on Ubuntu. My laptop's a weirdo.

The os's are diffrent frameworks and as such Ubuntu is probably is using the alsa driver and Windows is using Realtek and alsa is more universal.
