I am thinking to buy a 240 GB SSD but not sure how much space does it actually have. Right now I have a 500 GB HDD and it shows that out of the 500, 465 GB is its capacity. If thats so, would it be the same for an ssd (35 GB).

I was also thinking that to install Windows 7 on the SSD and the rest programs on the HDD (I have a eSata port).

The reason why a 500 GB shows only 465 GB is due to the differing definitions of what 1 GB means. Hard drive manufacturers define 1 GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes and have done so for a long time. Windows and other operating systems define 1 GB as 1024 x 1024 x 1024 = 1,073,741,824 bytes. Do the math and a 500 GB drive becomes about 465.66 GB. A 240 GB drive would have a real capacity of about 223.5 GB. There is also some file system overhead and rounding.

Hi,
Programs on esata would be painfully slower than being on a hard drive
esata would be okay as a system image drive though and other backups.

All any of this really means is you're using 165 out of 465gb :/

Not sure why you wouldn't want programs on the ssd :/

That is not so. You would not notice the difference between Sata and eSata. There is a very minimal delay.
