I want to restore a backup image to a second SSD and keep it unplugged as an OS backup ready to go in case my regular OS drive is attacked by malware. Can I do that with a system repair disc and will it cause any problems?

If you want to use the bmr ui , it will want to restore to the original source disk.

Therefore detach the original source disk and attach the target disk in its place for the restore.
Then when finished, reattach the original disk. It is simply removing the sata connector from the source disk and attaching it to the target disk.

Otherwise, the wbadmin commands can be used for the restore.
